Perhaps if you use a small plumbers propane torch you'll heat the plate up more efficiently. I think the wires are wicking away so much heat from your soldering iron, there isn't much left to melt the solder properly. You can also use the plumbers solder which is much thicker than electrical solder. I would also use flux paste to clean everything before soldering.

just found this old page and i have a question about the snare wires for the super ace.

on the end of the snares, how should it be...round type thing so the pin goes through it or is it a claw type set up? i just purchased a super ace and the ends definately dont look like yours.

any help would be greatly appreciated and i would upload the pics of it, but it keeps on timing out. i could email them to anyone that is interested in having a look at it for me. the snare has been stripped of the original wrap and some contact type wrap was on it and i took it off over the weekend. it dont have the original slotted lugs, they hae been replaced with more modern types. if i cant fix up, i will have holes filled and a later model throw, butt and wires fitted. i dont want to do it, but i really want the snare as a player.

Careful if you are using very old wires to soldier/de soldier...

As they used lead in that till who knows when?

I still have a couple of spools of leaded solder that I use for electronic projects. It works better than the no clean stuff (cleans oxidation and flows better), but you do need good ventilation and remember to wash hands when done.

I have a 1st generation Tama King Beat that was down to 12 snare wires.

I was unable to find replacement wires with the long tab ends. But found 2nd generation wires, with short tab, and the actual wires are the same length as those on the 1st generation.

I used your set by step process to remove the short tabs and replace them with the long tabs.
