From jwsedens

this is slightly off topic, but a matter of curiosity for you premier experts.what happens when you need to fix a Resonator series drum? for example - what if you need to replace a lug? can the inner ply be easily removed and re installed?

Yes, the inserts can be removed, kind of a b@tch to get back in though..

THanks for the info MikeEllis! I was hoping you would respond to this one. You are the "Ploughman of Premiers" for me!

From what I understand, the 'liner' is glued in just a few spots. And what funky poodle says, there must be a reason that resonators with the liners removed never got them out back in, must be really tough!

I recently came into a 3 piece resonator in jazz sizes with liners intact and near mint but only the 14'' floor rings forever, coated remo's all the way around but the 12'' rack and the 20'' kick don't ring at all! So tempted to remove those liners to get just a nice 3 ply birch shell sound like on my other set of Premiers (Olympic)! Luckily having been around VDF for a while I don't jump into altering vintage kits, altered nothing actually on any of my vintage buys...

I removed the liners from my Resonators when I got them to remove all the lugs and clean them and the shells. Very tricky. They made a special tool for removal but you can use a butter knife. There is a tutorial on line somewhere. I removed mine with no damage but have yet to put them back in. They sound great without them. But, to get them back in you have to bend the middle of the insert in and line up the edges and let it snap back into place. The inserts are very thin and you don't want to crack it but it is doable. The pain in the ass part Is the tone control, working around that. I was going to put mine back in one day and after 10 minutes I just said forget it for now, but I think I can get them back in if I had to.

Screws do come loose on the lugs sometimes and you have to be able to get them out and snap them back in.

Good to know Vibes! So tempted to try this myself, my floor rings forever but my kick and rack hardly at all with the same heads. Actually had to put the stock black dot SC head back on the resonant side of the floor to help cut some of the non stop ringing :D

Do I understand correctly that you mean there would been Resonator snares made during these years without a Resonator liner?

The Resonator snare was a '37' with a birch liner, so you could order one with or without a liner.
