hi guys,

first time poster on this forum and only found it 2 days ago, when i was looking at purchasing a late 60's yamaha kit from ebay, which i missed out on. i found heaps of threads about vintage yamaha's and i thought this is definately one website where i can get a lot of information from.

well i am on the look out for vintage sound/looking kit and i think i may of found myself a couple to chose from, but i aint too sure about either kit.

here is the first one - http://www.drumpalace.com.au/store/drum-kits.html?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage-ask.tpl&product_id=793&category_id=1

the second one - http://www.drumpalace.com.au/store/drum-kits.html?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage-ask.tpl&product_id=824&category_id=1

any information on these kits would be greatly appreciated and i am not too sure on the prices either...(i am in australia, so everything is always over priced) both come with snare drums which is appealing and i would only be buyinig both kits as shell packs. so i would think, that the prices would drop some what.

Those kits both look to be in quite good shape but to me the prices are very high. I buy a lot of drums online and even with the shipping, I've bought complete kits easily as good as those for as little as 250.00 delivered to my door, from 8,000.00 miles away. The most I have ever paid for a kit is around 850.00, shipping included and that was for a complete 4 piece with mounted Bongos and all original hardware -----a 1963 Gold Croco Trixon set which is worth about 3 times what either of those kits are worth. I bought the very same Olympic kit a while back from a drumshop in Toronto for 300.00.---hihat stand, bass pedal, snare stand and cymbal arm included.

I do realize that Australia is expensive for such things but so is Canada----we routinely get squeezed for about 25% more than U.S. prices.

Yes - caution! Don't rush into this. You should be able to do much better for the money. The Olympic kit is probably good quality, (I'm not an expert though) but you may notice that the badge on the snare, (60s) does not match the other drums, (70s or later?) and the spurs on bass drum seem too modern as well. The second kit appears to be a lower level Pearl kit which should be priced much lower as well. Be patient, and keep your eyes open for a good deal. They ARE out there.

The Olympic is the better made kit, better shells, lugs & plating, but the price is preposterous. .... The Pearl is likewise way out of line. One could find the best Vintage American kits for these prices.

Thanks for the advice guys and I think I will continue looking elsewhere. The guy who is selling these kits is very pricey and I think I will steer clear of him and just wait patiently for something to come along on eBay in Australia and the U.S

In the U.S. the pearl kit is 250.00 or 300.00 max, the olympic is worth more, but not much 350.00 tops, maybe 300.00 becuase the spurs are not original.

The Pearl was pearls top of the line at that time.

The Olympics were a lower Line Premier,I have played a few kits, very nice build quality and sound, but not worth a lot as a collectible vintage kit.

If the Aussie dollar was even with the U.S. dollar those kits are 4 times as much as in the U.S.

I was under the impression that vintage U.S. stuff cost 50 to 100 percent more than here.

Not sure what 60's thru early 70's Japanese and Brit kits are bringing in OZ,but that sounds very high to me,even if in excellent original condotion.

Drum Palace is a really expensive store. Mind you, if they had something I really wanted, I'd call them up and make an offer - I get the feeling they would take offers. I know only too well what it's like shopping vintage in Australia. But with patience and dedication, they do turn up. I saw a really nice Premier in great sizes with all attachments go for $1400 and that's more like what you can expect to pay. The Pearls can be had way cheaper than that on places like Gumtree. Good luck mate.

Yer thanks. I know he is very pricey and I reckon he would move on prices if you made him an reasonable offer. I would prefer a nice little Yamaha or premier and I just got to keep an eye out and be patient. I am looking overseas now and have found a couple of stores that will do business with me, so the net is slowly widening.
