Premier bass drum hoops in poor condition

Loading...

Hi.

I've bought a 60's (67?, 68?) Premier set (20"/12"/16").

Bass drum hoops are in this condition:

Here without inlay

The rest of set is in good condition (some rust on legs and spurs)

Do you think is worth trying to restore the hoops, or is not possible? Maybe some epoxi for wood will resist claws' action.

This is the set, by the way

You can cut some thin sheet metal, larger than the claw's foot print on the hoop, bent to shape, to act as a gasket/shield.

If it was me, I'd order some new hoops with correct inlay Chanel from precision or drum maker - paint then silver and install the inlay. I'd store the original hoops in case I ever sold it on.

Hi,

I may be wrong, but I don't think that Premier wooden hoops were painted in silver those days: they all came in black. And if you paint them black again, you easily can use them furtheron, as silver highlighted the roughness of the surface, while black 'takes it away.' :2Cents:

Unless you want it 100 % perfect again, you can take the one without inlay (but painted black) on the batter side and it'll work well.

Yes, they were painted silver in those days, (pre international standard, 1966). Putting on new hoops may cause problems due to newer hoops are a different diameter, they're likely to cause lug pull out or tension rod bending.

You can check with a few custom drum builders to see if they can make you a set of custom sizes, but most have forms or molds for standard sizes. It may cost you more than you're willing to pay.

PS: you can always check Ebay

You can restore those hoops. I have made a lot worse than that look brand new. I used Elmers Carpenter wood Filler to fill in all the gaps and indentations on the hoops. Then sanded those places to be even and smooth.

You will have little places all over the hoops where you use the fill and sand. Then re-paint them. I have heard of some people scanning the inlay and company's makeing exact copy's of the wrap.

Are you sure you haven't found the lost Ringo kit?

The inlay is not a problem. I have the original. I took it off because it was poorly attached. I think the original color for the hoops was silver grey, too. Even when Premier went on black hoops, for some finishes such black diamond pearl the hoops remained silver. Thanks to all for your replay.

The lost Ringo kit is like princess Anastasia: from time to time emerges other that claims to be The Real Thing.

you can tape wet cotton balls on the indents and that might raise it a bit.
