That Philly pic on the right looks like he is using a Slinger GK snare with 3 lines to me!

You guys are great.Lot of fun,not just a data an information!Tom Rankin from premier tribute site answer my mail and confirm what you said.Similar like stories I read here about Ludwig factory in 60-es and 70-es,they put on the drums what they had in that moment. So,when shells in premier started to be made of mahogany, maybe was some period in which they didn't put serial numbers on badges or some worker grabbed a badge from a bottom of pile and the badge was un numbered.Anyway, snare is great!

Ron,great collection of snares!Congrats, and beautiful pics!

Philly used to do that though....

He would get all these Gretsch kits for free, then pawn them for smack!

Sad,but true.......

Philly Joe was a Gretsch endorser for years before he went with Premier.

In the 50s and 60s, Gretsch endorsers, were the 'who's who of great jazz drummers:

Max Roach, Art Blakey, Sonny Payne, Jo Jones, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Art Taylor, Kenny Clarke (before he moved to Europe and went to Sonor, then Premier), Shelly Manne (before he went with Leedy in the early 60s), Mel Lewis and Art Taylor... just to cite the 'Cream of the Crop'.

Gretsch's policy was to give their artists ONE set a year, which had to be returned in order to get a new one.

In an interview many years later, Art Taylor spoke of the policy and the fact that he did his annual swap until he realized that drums get BETTER WITH AGE!

Here's 1) A.T. in a 50s Gretsch ad; 2) in the 90s with his old RB set.

The third pic is my 3-ply 'Progressive Jazz' set, circa 1958... the identical set to A.T.'s in the ad.
