Premier 14"x9" tom: why this size?

Loading...

Does anyone know what's the reason behind the Premier 14" toms on older sets being only 9" deep, whereas the accompanying 13" tom used to be 9,5" deep? Was it for timbre, volume, esthetics?

you mean 8" deep.

Why not? it works. I love it.

Here's mine 14"x8", 16"1/2x15", 22"x14":

I'm still restoring this one. The bass drum had a latter mount that left a big hole.

The hoops have been painted back to the original silver.

I read somewhere that it had to do with the steambending machinery they used to use back then only being able to accommadate up to a certain depth....or maybe it was they could only get the wood in sheets cut to a certain size.....I forget the exact reason but it was something to that effect.

In the 40s/50s/60s and early part of the 70s, all Premier toms were 8" deep, 10x8, 12x8 and 14x8.

I'm not positive, but I believe the reason for the 14 X 8" size tom was because Premier made die cast hoops for their drums only in 12, 14 & 16" sizes. They already had hoops for a 12" mounted tom, a 14" floor tom and a 16" floor tom, so it was easier to add a mounted tom in the 14 X 8" size rather than make another die cast rim for a 13 X 9" mounted tom.

They are great sounding toms- nothing else sounds quite like them!
