Here are photos of an approx 1964 6.5" Super Sensitive, badge number 3858. It is COA with COB hoops. Red 'baseball bat' muffler. The pivoting action has been reversed - to the left/counter clockwise is now snares off..to the right/clockwise is now snares on (but I don't know when this change occurred). The two sliding pieces have changed from metal to a hard nylon-type material (presumably for a smoother action.)

First photo is snares on, second photo is snares off. This drum also has the 10-strand individually adjustable snare wires.

One more item...in approx 1966, the strainer guards were secured to the bottom hoop by rivets - two on either side. See attached photo that I lifted from Reverb. I presume this was done to prevent loss when the drum was disassembled to change the snare-side head.

Note that the orientation of the throw-off lever has changed. From my observations, this occurred in 1964-1965.

From approx 1969 onward, the P70 mechanism was used, that has the stronger tubular strainer guards that withstand rough handling better than the earlier guards. See illustration in earlier post, dated July 8.

And that's about all I know about Super-Sensitives! I welcome the observations of others, so that we can all learn more.

What muffler was used on the rivetted guard 1966?

On my setup, it appears the individual snare wire holder was bent to fit the later throwoff. Not nice. I like how the guard is cut out here to access the slotted ends of the wires.

The expected muffler for a 1966 snare would be the 'baseball bat' with white felt....but the small 3/4" round muffler occasionally shows up in 1966 on a variety of drums....but I have never seen one on a 1966 Super Sensitive.

One more thought on SS snares. Several years ago, I decided to change out my snare side head (after about 20 years!) with an Ambassador or an Aquarian (I can't remember which), but afterwards I got snare buzz with the snares "off."

Someone on this forum suggested I use the Ludwig brand C1114 snare side head. Problem solved!

I dunno the technical aspects of this head - the thickness, etc - but it appears that SS snare drums like this head.

I still have a old Ludwig bottom head on my SS. I was thinking I should renew it. Maybe not....Need to check which part number it is.
