Pre-Serial # Keystone Badge, BDP Luddys

Loading...

I recently bought some Pre-Serial # Keystone Badge, Black Diamond Pearl Luddys. A 22" bass with natural finish on the interior of the shell, and 2 12" toms with white interiors. I already had a snare I bought about a year ago that almost matches perfectly. It has been restored and rewrapped and has a new aftermarket Luddy keystone badge, but it has the original white interior as well, and the correct throw off, butt, lugs, lug screws, and rims. Im sure its genuine vintage ludwig. A friend of mine gave me this 16" luddy floor tom for my birthday. It is white marine pearl under black paint. It is also white interior, with a ball bat muffler w red felt. It is a serial number keystone dating 1964. I plan to rewrap the floor tom. My question is "Would it be unethical to change the badge to a pre-serial# badge? Same question on the restored snare? The ft interior needs to be repainted also. Should I paint the inside of the bass drum shell? What is the best paint to use?

Thanks Y'all!!

Tough one Poppy. I think if you want to change out the badge maybe you could put the original on the inside of the drum. Just a thought.

Mike

PS: There is a page or a post that tells exactly what the white paint is and where to get it.

Poppy, I'm no expert, but I have read of and seen Luddy factory issued matched sets from 1964 which have pre-serial and serial keystone badges on the same set and were perfectly legit.

I'm not sure if that applies to your question exactly, but, there it is anyway.

You were probably aware of this anyway.

Hey man, why don't you convert to Slingerland long enough to buy my '71 set in the For Sale section?

You can always return to Luddy when your check clears.......Cool DudeCool Dude

This floor tom looks like it was from exactly the same era as the rest of the drums. Were the bass drums painted white in the interiors as well?

I don't think I could afford to collect slingys too!! lol

I do have a few slingy snares though. my 1st drum kit was a 4 piece slingy set. I was 14 yrs old. A friend of my dads painted them gold metal-flake. I wasn't really happy with that so I covered them out of black vinyl lol. I am 3rd generation in the upholstery business, so I was just doing what I knew best. Now that I know better, I use a lot of what I have learned in the car interior restoration business to help me restore the drums to original condition. Some of the jobs we do at the shop are to exact original sepcs. Im used to dealing with super picky people, and I have become super picky myself.

I have seen guys make a skylark into a GS, a cutless into a 442, a Lemans into a GTO and a chevelle into a SS. You really couldnt tell the difference except by the VIN # Thing is, it costs just as much to restore an impostor as it does to restore the real thing. Thank God drums are much much cheaper.

The wicked step-mom sold the slingys in a garage sale for $40!
