Potential Rogers Purchase

Loading...

I've got a couple of Rogers kits but none of them are really complete or original in that they are mismatched orphans or bare shells that I picked up, rewrapped, and added hardware. I do have a Wildwood kit but that stays in cases away from the light... gotta keep those wonderful blues and greens!

I still love the orphan kits and the sound is what counts after all, but I just came across an opportunity to buy a 5 piece blue strata (I guess Londoner) with matching Dynasonic that is all in beautiful condition. No scratching of lifting on the wrap, serial number on the Dynasonic is consistent with matching 1968 Dayton serial numbers for the 12, 13, 16 toms. Bearing edges look good, and the only thing missing is a bottom hoop and t rods for the 12" and the snare bridge for the Dyna, both of which I have. There's even 2 snare stands, 3 cymbals stands, bass drum pedal and 2 hi hats, all in good condition. Plus nice old fiber cases and the fact that many of the heads are original Rogers is obviously a good sign.

I took a few pictures but not in great light but I'm attaching them anyway. There is one broken collet and some tape on the inside of one tom which would come off easily. I guess someones idea of muffling.

My question is price.... with the matching Dynasonic it's a whole different ball game even if the rest of the kit is pretty much perfect, which it is. Hell, I could probably sell the hardware for $400!

Any opinions on price or what I should be looking for to make sure it's legit and not a rewrap or something weird? I like the guy and feel good about the deal, but any opinions welcome.

Easiest way to check for rewrap is look at the nails for the badges. Check to see if the nails are in the originally installed indentations. Replacement of the nails in different locations will show on the inside of the shell.

First comment is that if the snare drum is representative of the color of all the drums, the color is not blue strata, it is blue onyx. The quick look inside the 12 tom tends to indicate it would be a 1968 kit. If you are getting a kit is relatively nice condition with a few missing parts, it is likely to have a value of about $2500-$3000 assuming a 20,12,13,16 layout. Might vary a bit if it has a 22" bass or some other differing overall configuration. It would be an real find and best if kept all together if you can afford to do so. Pay for it by selling off all the odd ball stuff you can. Watch out for using the onyx patterns in cold weather, as they tend to crack easily under temperature stresses.

Good luck on the purchase and keep us informed of your progress including photos after purchase.

Man these look nice Pete. Hope you grab them. The fact you have the missing parts needed is a major plus. But you can also use it to bargain a bit on price yada yada yada...... Keep us posted please! Wood Dyna is the cherry on top!

Wayne (Hi Wayne!!) is 100% correct on the tape on the paper tag. The adhesive on duct tape will shred the paper tag if just pulled off. Best case is the tape has dried out and will allow removal. If not and she's stuck good I'd just trim the tape close to the tag and leave it as is.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Looking at the picture of the 12 again - the mount screws are not original. They look way too long. Could be they were lost during a cleaning and replaced with other carriage bolts. Check to see if they are chromed or just shiny steel.

Long screws for mounts are very common in 1968. I've seen it over and over again. Also seen, though less frequently, is black washers for the larger size. I've had several floor toms, in particular, with the large black washers. I used to keep a lot more pictures, some of which included these two features, but alas, I have cleared out quite a few in the past couple of months. In regards to these two features, there has never been any indication these were not part of the factory assembly.

The maple Dynasonic is worth around $2000 by itself. The rest of the kit is worth around $1000 if the wrap etc is original and has no cracks. And there is also the hardware as you said. The Rogers stands etc are each worth $100 +/-, so that's a lot right there.

So, if you can get the kit for $3000 or less, it's quite a buy...
