Portable Digital Recorders

We just replaced the keyboard player in our group. With him went a portable digital recorder that he used to record our rehearsals. He used to send me the recordings (MP3 format?) and I found them extremely helpful in pointing out our strong and weak points both musically and vocally of the respective songs that we were working on.

I'd like to purchase one of these recorders but have NO CLUE as to what make or model would be best for my purposes. I don't have a lot to spend but if I remember correctly he mentioned that whatever it was that he was using was purchased for less than $200.

Any words of wisdom would be GREATLY appreciated!

We have an Alesis digital recorder for our rehersals and our live shows. It is capable of shooting video as well as the audio, and has a USB plug to download right to your computer. It has 2 mini condenser mics on the top, with a video screen in the middle.Handy little suckers they are, expecially when trying to teach a replacement player. Our guitarist and bassist just quit on us, and weve been using tracks recorded to teach them the songs.

Try to get it up above the sound center of the room or else it will pick up a LOT of cymbals. Of course I am quite the heavy hitter, so that could explain it on my end.

Yes, the are quite the handy little addition. WELL worth the money. There may be better quality recording systems out there, but ALESIS mics sound pretty good, and for 149 you cant beat that. And it all depends on how much cymbal you have in the type of music youre playing. Like I said, im a heavy hitter, and it picks up a lot of my cymbals, almost to the point of over modulating and drowning out everything else, but my old guitar player was a know it all, and wouldnt listen to anyone else when given advice of where to place the recorder for optimum sound. Hope this helps!

I've got the Zoom Q3 HD recorder which is BRILLIANT! Its up around the $430 area though. But there is a cheaper option that zoom do which is the H1 Handy Recorder which is about the $180 mark. They make some rad stuff so might be worth a look too!
