Poor Star Wrap ...

Hi all!

as Ralf say to me recently, i have a question for the VDF!!! Clapping Happy2

so stay calm on your chair because what you will see can heurt you... LoLoLoLo

I recently bought i vintage Star kit (certainly a 1967 one) in a very bad condition...

All the Wrap have been repainting with something like Chrome wheel painting :/

see under:

I try to fix it, and after take of all metalic part, we can see really clearly the Blue Satin Flame under... (so goood to me!)

I try to use Aceton, but you know, Wrap don't like Aceton... so I Try a "green aceton susbtitute" who like plastic too, but not really good.

So now my Snare Wrap is Dead... and i want to take car of the Bass Drum...

Any idea??? (befor ordering a brand new re-wraping)

thanks a lot!!! flowers2

I feel your pain. I had the same issue with an aqua flame pearl Gretsch kit. It, too, had been painted over. I couldn't find any solvents or paint removers that would work without damaging the wrap. I ended up using a hair dryer and peeling off sections of paint with my fingers. Very tedious process and it took forever. But if you don't have a lot of cracking in the finish, it might work for you, if you have the patience. Best of luck. Looks like a pretty finish underneath.

wow, that is a big issue. You can try to sandpaper it (wet based). Start softly with 80 or so and go down to 200.

I had a case were the wrap comes back to the light. I think it depends on sprayed colour.

Like newvintageguy said...thats the method! I had a similiar case a while ago! You have to sand it very wet and start easy with an 80 Paper(like it`s already said) and you will see it comes off! After sanding use a good carpolish and it looks like new:-)

You will see;-) i am optimistic in that caseYes Sir

No, Sirs, I'm sorry to contradict.

If I recall correctly, these 'Satin Flame' wraps do NOT have a plain surface. It's some kind of corrugated (correct, Sgt pepers ?) ...!

So any sanding would NOT do the job.

I think, what member gwm (btw: respect for doing it! I would love to see pics of that restored kit either by link or pics here) said, may be the solution - albeit very, very time-consuming.

I'd try some dishwashing detergent diluted in water and rub it in with a toothbrush to a small test area.. If it shows promising signs of coming off .. I'd consider removing the wrap and soaking it in a similar solution in the bathtub for a day or so, then try to brush it off ... the grained surface scratches very easily so be gentle..

Cheers

Hi all thanks for your support!

as Ralf says, the Wrap is not plain, so no sand paper... it will destroy the "fire" effect!!

I know about water paper, it work very well on "normal" wrap.

i have try sand blaster (with glass sand) it work well but wrap become matt finish... pb again

the aceton substitute work well (made by Onyx) but put like a white film on the wrap...

i think a will re-wrap the shells....

if any new idea, tell meeee!

There has to be a gentle paint remover out there, I just don't know about it. I'd try the hairdryer first, then immediately rub it lightly with warm water with Tide detergent in it, not just damp but wet, so that it runs down the shell a bit - I think someone else in here used it on a white satin wrap and it came out really good. Beyond that.... no idea.
