Please Help Identify Year/Value of my Slingerland Snare!

Loading...

Hi There.....Ive been looking round ebay for various snare drums. As you all know i buy and sell. I have seen on there as of now same snare as yours but with blue sparkle/glitter wrap.

The ebay/item number is 122412509935

The price this guy wants is $999.00. I dont have a clue but that is what is out there. Apparently these snare drums are getting pretty rare. There is another one which is 5.5x14 that is a bit cheaper. Im not going to put peoples pics on here from ebay. Go have a look....Or type in Buddy rich slingerland snare drum...A lot of prices on ebay can be very over the top but thats the only one i saw at the moment. For all reference goto www.drumarchive.com have a look through the slingerland catalogues.

From Zevid

I wonder if that hole was for a mic? (I was told that the drum was used for a concert tour before I bought it...) Not sure about how many plies... but it seems quite thick to me! Any idea on how would I best estimate its resale value?

Will be 3 Ply Shell... inner Maple /Poplar/ outer Mahogany

Cheers

John

Yes, 3-ply would be expected. Thin, thick, thin lay-up. Is it?

Yes, I believe so.

Thanks for the ebay link. it looks like the exact same drum! I wonder if his asking price is realistic or not...

Question: Does the splitting around some of the screws make it much less valuable? (It is a very solid drum, and has no noticeable weakening or warping at all.)

Where the hole is you could put an original damper from slingerland whether it is original or not im not sure, then the drum is complete. Put it on ebay for what figure your happy with. Give the other guy some competition. As for the probs with inner ply, mention that on sale with quality pics accept offers. If it were mine i would fill in the splits with fine wood filler then wax with bees wax. Im not telling you to do that. But the interior does look dry.

Inner ply splitting can be pretty common to see. I'd leave it as is for selling. Most know what it is and have their own way to fix. To repair you run the risk of making it look worse that it is and trying to hide deeper damage.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Thanks for chiming in!

At this point, it may make sense to see if I can swap it in exchange for drums or cymbals rather than trying to sell it...

This one on e-Bay is a 5-ply shell without re-rings. The strainer is from the post Niles HSS era (later 80's early 90's). This may be a 70's drum with the strainer replaced or it may be an HSS era drum with a NIles badge added. Lots of these drums built during the HSS era which leads to confusion when trying to identify true Buddy Rich models.

Hi all!

I've been asked to chime in on this BR snare drum. While I do have knowledge on these drums, the true authority is our moderator, tommyp. Until he adds his wisdom on this drum, I'll go ahead and add my :2Cents:

Those members that have already weighed in have pretty much summed up what this drum is. What does seem odd to me, as already mentioned, are those lug screws, which were used in the late 50's to early 60's. Not sure why they are there! The overall physical condition of the shell interior, including the re-rings, just doesn't seem up to what Slingerland was producing at the time. Still the badge does appear to be original to the shell. With Slingerland, anything is possible! While the BR 4x14 showed in the catalogs with Stick Chopper hoops, you could get it with Stick Saver hoops. And, you could order the drum with any available finish. The BR drum was shown without a muffler, but there are plenty out there with mufflers. The drum in question shows a picture of what possibly looks like a 1/4" phone jack and may have been for an internally mounted microphone.

Given the overall condition of this drum, I'd put a value of around $250. However, the lack of these snare drums will probably put the actual selling price a bit higher. Just really depends on how badly a potential buyer wants the drum!

In my next post, I'm going to weigh in on the 4x14 drum being offered on eBay!
