Please Help Identify Year/Value of my Slingerland Snare!

Loading...

Hi guys!

I am new to this forum, but it seems like this is the best place to help me get to the bottom of the year and value of my Slingerland snare drum. I bought it used in '93 and have had it ever since. It still sounds as great as the day that I picked it up!

From the little research I was able to do, it looks just like the early 70's Buddy Rich models, but it seems newer than that to me (or maybe it was just really taken care of?).

Any guidance would be really appreciated!!!

Thanks for getting back me!

It does look like that model, however the ones that I saw in their '70 and '73 catalogs didn't show an option to get it in black, only pearl.

Can I tap into this forum's knowledge-base regarding the resale value of this drum?

Thank you!

Its a nice looking snare drum. Just wondering if it was re-wrapped black at some time. With the splitting of the inner shell i wouldnt put any big value on it. Just keep it as a players drum. I wouldnt tune it too high with the damage. There are ways of repair to the shell. Noticed one of the lug backing screws as an odd one. Are the hoops steel or brass. Im sure some slingerland expert will give you better value as is.

I believe the hoops are originals. Does that make them steel?

Any Slingerland pro's out there who can help me with the value?

I would consider trading it in to upgrade some cymbals, provided I can get something decent for it...

Badge looks '70-'72. Serial number guesstimate is '71. Hoops should be COS (magnet will stick). "P" stamp means drum was originally wrapped. Black wrap was available. Is yours wrapped or painted? Zoomatic looks correct except for tension knob. Knob looks like the later "fine knurled" version. May have been replaced, not uncommon. Does the upper rear of the Zoomatic have a cut-out relief to clear the upper hoop? It should. In addition to not all being the same something is odd with the fasteners. The double slot lug fasteners would be expected on much earlier model drums. One would expect to see hex head fasteners on a 70's era drum. Forum member idrum4fun has extensive knowledge of these Buddy Rich models hopefully he will weigh in on this.

Thank you for the info!

To answer your questions:

Hoops are NOT magnetic. (What does that mean?)

Drum is wrapped-black.

Upper rear of the Zoomatic DOES have a cut-out relief.

No idea about why it has the double slot lug fasteners...

Any more info would be appreciated!

Non magnetic hoops may be chrome on brass (COB) used until 1970. Chrome on steel (COS) would be expected on this drum but they may have been changed. Many of these came with "stick chopper" hoops. Most of the details point to this being a Buddy Rich snare, although not entirely original.

What is the extra hole in the panel to the left of the badge? How many plies is the shell?

I wonder if that hole was for a mic? (I was told that the drum was used for a concert tour before I bought it...)

Not sure about how many plies... but it seems quite thick to me!

Any idea on how would I best estimate its resale value?
