Plastic Bass Drum Hoop For Slings???

Loading...

I am amazed at what I find the more I restore my 1958 Slings. This morning I got down to the bass drum hoops. One bass drum hoop is black plastic. The other bass drum hoop is wood. The black plastic bass drum hoop is wider than the wood and the inlay groove on the black plastic is wider. Since the set was only seven years old when I bought the set used, both hoops are likely original. When I purchased the set in 1967, the inlay strips were in both hoops.

Have any of you ever heard of Slings using one plastic and one wood bass drum hoop in the 1950's?

I have never heard of plastic bass drum hoops either. Plastics were a big deal in the 1950's. If Slingerland was using plastic drum wrap, I am wondering if they experimented with plastic hoops. I was attempting to sand off the bottom layer of paint but never hit the wood I was expecting. I noticed years ago the hoops were different sizes. Never dreamed they were made of different materials.

On the hoop in question, you can see the four mold marks left by the molding process. If no one else has ever heard of this I will try and get a digital picture and upload.

OK, if this attachment thingy works, here is a shot of the one of the mold marks on the hoop.

From Rob G.

Got plastic hoops on my stencil kit.

I was gonna say...sounds like a japanese stencil replacement......are we absolutely sure the kit is a Slingerland and not a japanese stencil kit?

The set is genuine Slingy. However, I am not the original owner. So now after I have done some more researching, I am guessing the hoop is not original to the set. If the hoop was replaced I do not recall replacing the hoop but since I am an old guy, ahem, memory has a way of fading. :)
