Pitting on Bearing Edge

Loading...

Have y'all ever had a chrome snare with pitting on the bearing edge? There's a pretty good amount of pitting and flaking so I'm wondering how much it would affect the sound. I've got a line on a (relatively) cheap 402 and if that's gonna be an issue I'll just pass.

The listing also says because the rims are bent it's difficult to tell if the shell is out of round, but I wonder just how out of round a Supra shell could be before you hear it. Wouldn't you think a warped shell would be obvious to the naked eye if it was bad enough to affect the sound of the drum?

I had an 80's ludwig 402 that was pitted city all along the bearing edges the top and bottom. But it still sounded awesome.

You have to see the drum in-person. Drums that come with red flags have to be seen. Take a tape measure with you. It's the only way to know for sure if the shell is out of round. You don't want to sink your money into the drum only to find out it won't tune properly, or you can't get heads on it. Check this one out carefully before buying. The flaking on the bearing edges shouldn't be an issue. If they are, smooth them over with 00-00 (double-O) steel wool. If there are any deep chips, use some clear nail polish to fill/level the area, allow to dry/cure, then go over it with the steel wool to smooth any bumps.

Thanks for the insight, y'all. It's in Milwaukee which rules out inspecting it in person. I don't wanna end up with an unplayable drum I wouldn't be able to sell so I'll be passing.
