Pioneer Snare Ludwig 58-59, or 70's Supra Ludwig

Loading...

I have a guy who wants to sell me the 70's supra for $50. 10 lug, P-85 throw off, it is peeling quite a bit, and it's missing the blue/olive badge. Thumbs up or down?

Also, a 3-ply '58-'59 Pioneer snare. Missing one of the rims. Good condition overall on this. $100 for this snare. Thumbs up or down?

Thanks for any input!

-Kevin

If you're looking for the sound of a Supra but not the looks (as in a studio drum), then go for it. Make sure it's not peeling/flaking on the inside...

As for the Pioneer, that's a tough call. I would only pay about $100 for a Pioneer if I liked the sound of it. Since it's missing a rim, it might not be worth it. If the missing rim is the snare-side head, then good luck trying to find a rim with 6 lug holes as well as slots for the snare...

Here is the link I have for the Pioneer snare. It seems everything is there except that bottom rim. Let me know what you think.

The bottom bearing edge shows some signs of damage but, for $100.00, I've seen the P-83 throwoff sell for that much, alone. I don't know how much work it would be, but between the lugs, throwoff, lug screws, badge and top rim, it's probably even money at least. I wouldn't pay that much for it, but I might if I needed a P-83.

O-Lugs, where are you seeing the damage to the bearing edge? I only see the rather deep snare beds. Looks okay to me otherwise. Pics are kinda small/blurry.

Also, if you don't care about originality, drummaker.com has 14" 6 hole 2.3 mm snare side hoops for $13.60.

Well...I thought I saw a chip but on second inspection, I guess it could be the bottom of the P-83 I'm seeing. Sorry. :o

Well, as of right now, I am kinda thinking of just getting the Supra. However, I will 'inspect' the Pioneer and see what I think about it. He said the chrome was only flaking on the outside, none on the inside, so that's good! We will see what happens.

There is a good chance that if I do get them both, that I may try to turn around and sell the Pioneer. So, if anyone is interested, let me know!

Thanks again for everyone's help!

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Yeah....I was gonna say a 6-hole generic snareside hoop is readily available...

I dunno, it's a tough call...the Supra price is better, the Pioneer price not that bad, but the finish looks a bit compromised too...I would ultimately let sound decide.

Just out of curiousity (not that I am suggesting this in this instance) has anyone ever sandblasted off a peeling chrome on a drum shell ???

Complete replating would run between $100-200, so that's probably not worth the $$$.

Oh Nailfoxx,

I was going to drive to that guy's house tomorrow to have a look at the Pioneer drum. I live in Ashland, OH. Maybe I'll let you have a stab at it if you want. I told him that if he doesn't get any bites by Thursday that I might drive to see him. Let me know what you think of the drum.

Hi, I went ahead and bought both snares. I want to try to find a rim for it, and I will tune it up and see what it's all about.

Jon, you want to PM me back on here or email me your email address, I am happy to contact you first if I decide not to keep it.

Today was the only day this week I had off, that's the only reason I was able to get up there today, I hope there are no hard feelings.

The finish on the Pioneer is in pretty decent shape given the age. If I remember, I will try to post pics of these two snares.

Thanks to everyone,

Kevin
