picked up some projects over the last few days

I hadn't bought anything much for a while and was starting get withdrawal symptoms. This has been remedied with some withdrawals from my bank account.

After picking up and cleaning the 20s Ludwig snare last week, this week I picked up an early 70s Premier B303 kit in black from a fellow forum member. It's not something I need but I have a bit of a thing for these mahogany shelled Prems. This one is unusual as I haven't seen many in black or with an 18" deep floor tom, both of which were used by Keith Moon. It's a bit scruffy but it'll come up good with some love and attention. 22/13/14/16

Then there's the mixed set. Early Yamaha bass and tom, Tama floor tom, Olympic stands, Premier throne, unknown cymbals etc. But what really caught my eye was the snare. I've yet to get this kit but I'm betting on the snare being a very early COB 2000. It has the earlier badge and beer barrel hoops and a lack of pitting on the chrome. Needs a throw handle but that won't be too hard to find and it has a the original double ten wires in place. It's maybe a bit like finding a Ludwig trans badge COB Super except not worth much:) Still, the whole lot was around US$150

Finally there's the old Carlton 18" tenor. I already have one of these but couldn't resist getting this one. I use my current one as a bass drum and it's brilliant. Maybe a double bass kit?

I've got some cleaning to do.

Lucky guy! Only this one alone is the price you've paid worth. Take a magnet: if it sticks, it is COB. But the flaking says: it could be Aluminium as well (in this case the magnet doesn't stick to the shell). Especially the Aluminium shells like to have pitting (more than the COB shells).

The lever comes up frequently on feebay UK, or you may ask for it here:

Great find, I recently paid a premium for a kit just to satisfy my urge to collect something cool.

No way - you mean Fayray picked up some Yamaha Y-badge?? Really?? You mean Fayray - THE Fayray? Yamaha??

:)

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Why so surprised? I'm a fan of these Yamaha kits.

Ralf - thanks. Unfortunately the magnet test won't work as it won't stick to brass or aluminum. I'm quite confident that it'll be COB but when I get it I can compare the weight to my Alu 2000

Alot2008 - I've done that frequently:) I often find vintage drums are like buses - nothing, then three turn up at once

I thought, a steel version (COS) existed, too?

that's right Ralf but the COS version came much later - late 70s/early 80s I've read. This is an early drum as seen in this 1968 catalog image

Sarcasm - that's what that was.

Will you be able to find a matching floor tom (or could you possibly already have one?)

I thought you'd mistaken me for one of the naysayers;)

Unfortunately I don't have a spare FT and finding one won't be easy

If you were to consider parting with the tenor drum, let me know, don't really need it but have a thing for display drums and drumamalia going on atm.
