Picked up PICS!! Star"mint" kit $75.

Well it was about 360 degrees from "mint" just north of firewood. My pics make it look better than it is. I knew I was in trouble when the kid selling it first words were " my friend told you this was a project kit, right?" The only reason I pulled the trigger on this is that the color really intrigued me. Pros: Awesome color, tight wrap. no tears or cracks, shells, nice shape (well, keep reading), metal bass hoops (thought they were plastic??) and he threw in a cool vintage throne. Cons: NOT MINT, cleanable rust here and there, muffler knob on snare over tightened to the point it's starting to pull through the snare shell. and the big one: when I got home and unloaded the floor tom, I noticed it had a different badge "Musketeer Barth & Feinberg" What??? how could it be this odd color? well it's not! If you look at them side by side it is definitely lighter. But for 75. I'm happy. Check out the pics. pics not that great, taken with my phone. Let me know what you think...Rich.

Just google-ing, first result:

'(Albert) Barth, (Morris) Lutchen and (Henry) Feinberg was a New York distributor founded in 1923 for the distribution of imported musical instruments, however they also distributed instruments produced in the US as well. In 1927 Morris Lutchen died and sometime after his death the company became Barth Feinberg. I know they were still in business in the 1950's but they don't appear to exist now.'

So it is possible, that the floor tom is Star-made, too. Just another badge on it.

WMP is an always sought-after finish, and fading is usual in many cases (don't forget that this set is > 40 years old).

Conclusion: a nice find!

Hello Richm,

Nice drums they sure enough look like Star

going by the tom mount receiver on the bass drum (identical to my Stars)

Also my Star bass is 22" eight lug with black painted steel hoops

I thought my kit, which looks as original as any used stencil kit

I have ever found, had somehow been fitted with some non original steel hoops

As most have never run into steel ones on a kit of that vintage before

yours are the exact same it seems. so maybe somewhere along the line Star went with steel.

If you ever feel like you might want to double your money on those drums

I will give you $150.00 even with the adopted floor tom

Here's the 20" "Krut" cymbal that came with the kit. No cracks or key hole just A LOT of dents in the edge. Looks like he was trying to make a pie crust. LoLoLoLo What's the best way to get these out? Good old fashioned ball peen hammer and carpeted bench?

To be fair, it probably always made a better pie crust than a cymbal sound. I've never heard a Krut that didn't sound like it would be better used for something other music.

Fantastic for $75!

The WMP inlay on the kick hoops isn't yellow becasue it doesn't have [yellowed] paper backing under it. You could lift or cut along the seams on those drums and that wrap will actively pop right off. Then you could either figure out how to install new paper or just paint the back of the wrap white.

I of course chose the easy path, paint, and it makes a huge difference.

There's also a lot to be said for leaving stuff more "original" of course...
