once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
jaghog,...(Hopefully not Naval),
You just gave me insite to take my Battleship out of the closet, set the kit up and play, just so I can say I can still do it and do it longer than him !!

Phil quits at 60 due to health problems. I can understand that. My dad (who was a drummer for 50 years) played up until about 3 weeks before he passed away at age 57 from cancer. I can understand that too. Technically he quit because of health reasons too, but he did it as long as he physically could. I think that's the lesson to be learned here. Do what you love for as long as you can physically do it. After that, why torture yourself with the pain.
Phil will be missed in the music world, but his legacy lives on. (as does Phil, well at the moment anyway)
Well now I hear on the news today that Phil is not retireing !! I think he read Jaghog`s post !!

He's an amazingly good drummer. I will understand his choice if he does ... but it would bug me. He's got some great grooves still in him. I would want those put to tape.
Great "lefty" drummer...I thought his work with Eric Clapton was superb! His technique/style will be missed but will carry on through the gift of his music....He is an all around seasoned musician!!!
Cheers
