Pearl Varitone early 80s drumset on auction

Loading...

Another BTW -- Officially, according to the 1978 Pearl (US) catalog, these are called "Vari-Pitch Cannons." They offered a double-bass set (Model F-8DVP and Model FW-8DVP) that had (along with 2-14x22 BDs) 5 of them plus a Vari-Pitch SD. Also offered was a single BD set-up (Models F-6VP and FW-6VP).

On page 11 of the same catalog, listed are 10", 12", 14", and 16" diameter vari-pitch drums (on double concert tom stands, although in the "set" versions the 16" is a "floor tom" with legs), and they ARE listed as being "PHENOLIC" shells (so I was wrong in my first post -- just going by my sometimes faulty memory there -- and anyone my age understands that!).

Man, those old catalogs really are important to have access to, huh?:)

Craig, I'm needing to go to work (and you're probably not up yet), but I may be calling you this afternoon...

Oh, and the 10", 12", 14", and 16" diameter vari-pitch drums are the shell sizes, as the actual roto-tom head sizes are 8", 10", 12", and 14" respectively...

Hi Guys

Just joined this forum today and thought this may be of interest to you http://www.drumarchive.com/Pearl/ check out the Pearl 79 US catalogue. There are a few different kits like the one you are looking at. i have just dug out of my parents attic my old Pearl Dynafamily drum kit ( i was 17 when i bought it 36 years ago) 2x24" wood-fiberglass bass drums, 18" wood-fiberglass floor tom, 14" jupiter steel snare and 8 concert toms 6" to 16". The concert toms as far as i can make out from what i have read on the subject have phenolic shells. it looks like the kind of dark reddish brown circuit boards you used to get. they are in need of restoring mainly the chrome parts. the inside of the phenolic shell looks similar to the colour of the shell in the pics you posted. hope this helps.

cheers

Lindsay

From MIKEY777

Ok. i found my notes. These are from about 20 years ago talking to Andy Florio{ Mr. Florio know vintage drums},Louie Bellson, and Arno Lehmann over lunch one day in Hollywood .ca.This story is why and how these drums were made.Back in 1971-1976 or so Mr. Bellson was playing Pearl drums.Pearl even had a set like his set up in the mid 1974-75 catalog named "double 10"..2 24" bass drums,13" M.tom,2 16x16 f.toms, single headed 6"8"10",12" toms all drums were fiberglass and a C.O.B snare..When Remo came out with the Roto-toms[1975] Mr. Bellson started to used a 14",16" and or 16",18" on the side of his set over his floor toms..Pearl did not like this Mr. Bellson useing other drums then Pearl.Pearl was paying him to used Pearl drums only..So in or about 1976 Mr.Bellson stoped useing Pearl drums.Pearl went to Remo to see if they could used the roto drums and Pearl shells maybe to get back Mr.Bellson.But it was to late Mr.Bellson move on. But Remo went along with Pearl. These Pearl Varitone drums were made with the Pearl Pres. shells for the first two years 1976-78..Pearl ran out of these shells and since they were making Fiberglass shells{1974-80] and had alot of these in the wearhouse they stated to make them with the Fiberglass shells this lasted to 1980..That was the last year of these drums were made. Not to many of these sets were sold by Pearl in the U.S.This is way they are Rare to fine all toms from 6" to 18" also a snare drum was made..But Pearl never made a bass drum...Mikey

I just wanted to add a few things.First when i said the toms were made from 6" to 18" i was talking about the Roto tom part not the shell the shell was 2" bigger than the Roto tom..Also i have got a few emails asking what i think the rarer set would be.I would say the fiberglass shell set would be.I have only seen two of these sets i have seen many more of the "Pres" shell sets. Also a side note on the floor tom sizes Pearl made a 16" shell with a 14" Roto tom and a 18" shell with a 16" roto tom and a very rare 20" shell with a 18" roto tom...I have seen the 16 and 18 floor toms but i have never have seen a 20" floor tom...Mikey
