I've been told that the Pearl Valencia kits from the late '60s have 3-ply shells with re-rings. Is this correct?
Also, are these drums worth purchasing as a "beater kit" or are they simply firewood?
Thanks in advance for your time and your help!

Hmm? Never heard of Valencia stencils. Somebody over on another forum has posted that there is one on craigslist in OH. The magical Tiger Eye/ root beer. Clean looking kit. Are those late 60's or ealry 60's?

It is a model of Pearl - mid/late 60s. I've heard good things about them. Any Valencia kit you are researching - seller/current owner should be able to tell you if they are 3ply or not. (I get to play Captain Obvious tonight!)
It depends on condition. If you treat drums with respect, always case them, demand the drunks stay away - go for it.
If you want a beater kit for a punk show, buy an old Tama Swingstar - the tanks of not-so-vintage MIJ. I consider a Valencia more vintage and much more valuable than a Swingstar.
If you are considering the one in Toledo - that is FAR from a 'beater' kit. Collector, VERY respectable player kit. When I say respectable, I am not only describing the worthiness of the kit, but what I believe the drummer should be with them.
These old MIJ 3ply kits are delicate and should be treated as so. With good edges, heads, and tuning, I believe they are as good as any other vintage drums out there. Hardware is replaceable and while the modern stuff is more 'solid', I have never had any issue with MIJ hardware failing on me. Wingnuts are smaller and that brings a bit more frustration, but I have never had anything brake or fall on me.
I hope this gives you more insight as to the drum, as opposed to more insight about me.
A 70 year old jazz drummer CHOSE to buy the one mentioned above. What does that say about these drums? (rhetorical)
I would like to collect one of these kits.
Buy those as fast as possible if the shells are solid with no ripples in the plies what a find
And if you really want to make them sing polish the edges and put some real skin on them.
