Pearl set rare?

Loading...

I have been trying to sell this kit on Clist, but I really didn't know much about the drums, so I took pics and sent them over to Pearl's coporate office for them to evaluate. here is their response, after reading this, I'm not sure I want to sell em, or if I do what price I should ask. any ideas?

Hi Gary.

You have one of the great Pearl Export Series sets that we manufactured between 1991 and 1993. The shells were made from 8 plies of mahogany with an inner ply of birch. The covered finish is made from polished stainless steel. We used the finish on several series from 1986 through 1993, but only for the two year period of ’91-’93 on the Export Series with the 3-piece high-tension style lugs. These sets have become rare over the years, ones in excellant condition are collectable, sadly, many people didn't know what they had back in the day, and took the wrap off, and destroyed the steel. Its a keeper if you have taken care of it well. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Interesting information... and even though they may just be rare and "collectable" with the steel wrap, you'd still be hard pressed to find someone who is actually looking for them. The bottom line is that they are Exports, and as far as resale goes that style of lug has never been real popular or desirable.

To flip, I wouldn't pay more than $250, if that much. To a player you might be able to get $350 to $400. Just my :2Cents:.

Bill

BTW -- I've got a pair of Pearl maple shell 14x24s in the steel/chrome wrap and mine have the standard lugs. I've never received much interest in them when offering them for sale, and many on here can attest that I don't price my stuff high...

If you look at the reflection of the flash, it make a perfectly straight line the same thickness from top to bottom. This means the finnish is perfectly flat and free of imperfections, if you spin the drum and the line warps, that would be an imperfection. Yours look great and perfect.

Is the snare Stainless Steel, I see crimps ?

The drums are in good shape and look good. While rare, I doubt they are collectible in the sense of what we would generally consider collectible. They are Exports after all which is basically a lower to mid level kit. While not positive I would assume that when the Pearl Corporate office says Mahogany, you should read that as Luan. Fun kit to have though.

On this kit to re-wrap it in new stain less steel would be big money and a deal breaker for my customer so we when with buffing out the metal wrap and hand polished every nut and bolt from top to bottom , replaced all the tension rods and the plastic tom and bass drum inserts , the one good thing about that job was the bearing edges were in mint cond , We also re skined the kit with Aquarian heads tops and bottoms wich made this kit stand out in sound

The customer was very happy with our work and giged the kit for a while and later sold his kit to the tune of a decent profit including my shop cost and let me tell you and it was not for the low ball numbers that were mentioned.

Personally I would hang onto the kit unless you absolutely need the money. If selling I'd do so via Ebay unfortunately. Write up a fancy history and take a photo of the email from Pearl HQ. Who knows? And that refurb by drums is exquisite!
