Pearl Presidents?

Loading...

So we got a SWEET vintage set of pearls the other day from (egads) Guitar Center. We went to exchange a cable, and ended up buying an entire kit!

They had it marked as a Pearl President series, but I'm not so sure that's what it is. Looking at the catalogs from that era, I can only find pictures of the challenger series (from '68), but this has more and different lugs. Also, the badges don't say President on them, but from what I can find, the first couple years were just the big "Pearl" badges. These things are surprisingly difficult to find info on, considering they were supposed to be the flagship model that brought Pearl into the big leagues.

They sound KILLER (I've never heard a bass with such a sweet BOOM), and they even had what we think were probably the original heads (def. the resonants, quite possible the beaters, though we swapped them out and saved the old ones).

Sadly it was only the bass, floor, and rack, but they were only $250! It's tough to find 45yr old drums for that price, and we're definitely stoked.

Does anyone have any more info about these drums?

(Nevermind the cymbals in the pictures - we're building a little bit at a time, so we bought an Xs20 hat, and we're going to add a nice ride/crash or two later. Maybe a giant beat. And the snare is a stage custom I had lying around)

Thanks!

Well, those are the correct lugs, so a good shot of the interior will tell if they are fiberglass or not.

Def. not fiberglass. Here's the inside of the floor tom (all of them are the same wood, I believe). They're 5-ply something (doesn't look as light as maple to me, but I'm not sure what 50yr old maple would look like). Also, sorry for the ****ty phone pics, I just don't have a camera anymore...

Well, here is my take on it: The shells are not maple, they are mahogany lauan. The edges look like they have been redone.

here are the catalog pages from the parent site:

Yeah, I've looked at that, but I can't seem to find 'presidents' before 69, when they changed the tom mount, hence the confusion.

Presidents are fiberglass shells. These lugs were used on other models as well. Pearl really did not have that much continuity throughout the product line. This shell, being a 6 ply, would be 67-69. they went from the 3 ply shells in mid 67, as did Star. I would not feel to bad about not being able to fully ID the kit as that is one of the more desirable wraps, and in 5 years, it should appreciate to about twice what you paidPM Osakabop, he is the resident Pearl expert.

Well, it not "fake" mahogany, but Asian mahogany, which has a "looser" grain than African mahogany. Mahogany woods are indiginous to every continent and are from different trees. I apologize for my mistake, the earlier Presidents are indeed wood, whereas the later shells were wood/fiberglass. Lauan is not a name of the wood itself, but a plywood layup and cutting technique.
