Pearl 'President' Kit ID Help

Loading...

Awesome....thanks for the replies. I will take a look at everything that you have suggested and post the answers to the questions asked. I do feel truly lucky to have found this kit even though I was a die hard TAMA guy. One thing I didn't mention was does anyone know what a kit like this cost brand new and what it might be worth today ? I have the entire set up insured for $10k on my home owner's policy.

I've got some old catalogs and price lists... if you give me the complete configuration and sizes, I can get you pretty close to MSR.

Okay so here is what the configurations are:

Toms

6 x 6

8 X 6

13 X 9

14 x 10

15 x 12

16 x 14

16 x 17 floor tom

22 x 16 bass drum

14 x 5 1/2 snare

I've posted other pictures and here is some other notes as well. The snare has the PRESIDENT badge but the other shells all have the 'PEARL Japan' badge only. The bass drum is the only one with the wood-fibreglass badge on it but all of the shells have the same design and same looking hardware. The insides of the shells look like that red coloured fibreglass with the exception of the 6" tom which is a white finish. Hopefully all of this will help put something together on this kit. BTW, thanks for all the help Bowing

Hey, I really like those pics!

From what I could find, Pearl never had a set configured quite like yours, at least during the 1970s. It appears your set may have been pieced together over time, especially since you definitley have a “President” snare drum and some of your concert toms may be of the “President” era (red in color inside the shell).

So, I’m using a price list dated March 1, 1977. It actually matches up with their 1975 US market catalog (cheaper to print new price lists than new catalogs, I suppose). This list includes the Pearl part #, description, and price of each drum:

Concert Toms:

FG06 – 5 ½ x 6 w/bracket mounted -- $50.00

FG06 – 5 ½ x 8 w/bracket mounted -- $55.00

FG13 – 9 x 13 w/bracket mounted -- $95.00

FG14 – 10 x 14 w/bracket mounted -- $100.00

FG15 – 12 x 15 w/bracket mounted -- $120.00

FG16 – 14 x 16 w/bracket mounted -- $130.00

Bass Drum:

FW222 – 14 x 22 BD w/spurs mounted -- $230.00

Floor Tom:

FW216 – 16 x 16 TT w/legs mounted -- $145.00 ($165 if fiberglass)

Snare Drum:

B 4514 – 10 lug, 5 x 14, brass shell, chrome plated -- $145.00

Total Retail, drums only (1977) -- $1,070.00

Notes/questions:

1) BDs that were 16x22 didn’t show up until the 1980s, AFTER the wood-fiberglass line was discontinued. So, did you measure from the edges of the hoops, or is this the shell depth?

2) Pearl never had (to my knowledge) a 16x17 floor tom. In their catalogs are 16x16s and 16x18s (14x14s too, but that don’t apply here). An interesting note: EVERY “16x16” Pearl FT of this era, both FG and W/FG (that I have owned or sold) had an actual SHELL DEPTH of 15 inches. But, if you measure the depth with the rims, you get appr. 16 inches. So, if you measured your FT with the rims on and get 17 inches… you’ve got something I’ve never seen (a Pearl FT that has an actual shell depth of 16 inches).

3) I don’t have any price lists that include the “President” line of drums, so I just used the standard COB 10 lug snare drum price.

Hey, hope this helps a little. As you might have guessed, I get a little excited about the Pearls of this era!

Bill you are awesome. I can't tell you how much your help has meant to me in putting a 'face' to my kit. Yes I am probably not getting a proper measurement as getting around everything is rather difficult. This kit is set up in my living room just inside the bay window (blocked by a dark curtain for privacy) on the front of my house. I get quite a gaggle of people outside in the summer time when I'm horsing around. The entire set up now numbers 22 pieces and I'm looking to expand still with some more cymbals and some sound specific drums ! You seem very knowledgeable Bill and as I said I'm not a Pearl guy so what do you think this kit is worth in today's economy ?

As for the notes/questions here we go:

This is more current photos of how this kit is set up now and they show the kit a bit better. I swapped my Zildjian hats for my Sabian AA 14" rock hats and I swapped my 8" Sabian splash for a 10" Zildjian splash. When I pick up a couple of more cymbals and stands I'll put the 8" back into use. I replaced the Gibraltar tractor type thrown with my TAMA throne that I find more comfortable for leg movement.
