Pearl MLX 11 piece drum set question

Loading...

I have a chance to purchase a Pearl MLX drum set from the early 80's for approximately $500. The set includes one 22 inch bass drum, 14x5 matching snare, 8 rack toms and one floor tom. The finish is a walnut stain. I have attached a picture of the badge and for you guys to see what the seller says is the worst issue with the drums (deep scratch on one of the rack toms). These are an 8 ply maple drums from approx. 1982. What do you guys think?

I think it's a great deal on a wonderful drum kit. I bought a Pearl MX kit back in 1981 and still have it. The shells are the same, but the 'L' in MLX stands for lacquer finish as opposed to the wrap on mine. The wrap on mine had got in a pretty rough state after years of gigs and traveling so I got Precision to do a rewrap in Burgundy Sparkle (close to the original solid wrap color) and I love them.

The bad part of this kit was the Pearl 7/8" tom mounts, so when I rewrapped them I carefully filled the mount holes in the shells and they are now 'virgin' and I use RIMS mounts. I have the exact same badges on mine.

The snare sounds interesting... is it a maple shell also? My kit came with a Jupiter COB snare which I like a lot, but I've always kept an eye open for a MX or MLX snare which I would rewrap to match the rest of my kit. Let me know if you want to flip the snare!

The snare is maple as well. They are a walnut stain. Personally, I do not know what the hell to do with 8 toms, but they are not concert toms and all of the hardware to use them is in tact.
