Hi...I acquired a very nice Pearl Jupiter snare drum recently (parallel snare set up) and it has a "President" badge. I'm trying to determine the approximate year.... with not a lot of success. The Pearl catalogs I've found show the "President" badge circa 1969 but the Jupiter snares that I've found all have just the "Pearl" badges and not the "President" badge and they seem to date in the mid '70's. Any thoughts as to what the year might be on a "President" Jupiter snare ??? Thanks....
Pearl Jupiter Snare but with a "President" Badge
It is my understanding that the "Jupiter" Snare Drum didn't show up in the American Market Pearl catalogs until the early 70s, and continued to be offered without any significant changes until the early 80s. During most of this period it was available in both 6.5x14 and 5.5x14 versions, as well as either brass shell or what they simply referred to as "metal." What I've seen always just has the "Pearl" badge.
But with what you've come up with is part of what makes all of this vintage drum thing even the more interesting. I would "guess" that you've got a drum that was offered in another market (besides the US market) or possibly have a very early version when they were still offering their President line of drums and the catalogs didn't ever catch up. That is a very real possibility, as Pearl would make changes to their specifications in production but since they didn't always print a new catalog every year it may take a while for the catalogs to reflect the changes (and sometimes they never did!). Ludwig was notorius for "transitional" periods, and this isn't the first "transitional" issue I've seen with Pearl.
In any event, it's a nice drum. I've got a 1978 6.5x14 Jupiter currently up for sale.
