Pearl help

Loading...

I recently bought a 7 piece pearl export kit stupid cheap off craigslist. I have a few questions that I have not been able to find through internet research.

1. I believe it is an '83 because of the coating on the inside of the shells, but what type of wood are the shells? All I could find was that they were "select wood with an acoustic coating".

2. Has anyone had any experience buying wraps from jammin Sam? We want to reward the kit, and all I have read is good, but is there anything that we should watch out for?

Ps. I want to thank the guys in this forum. I have used several drum and guitar forums, and the guys on this forum have been the most helpful by far,

Thank you

Shells are probably phillipine mahagoni, better known as luan, with zola coating.

Quite the standard for that time!

I think later they had a birch layer inside, but i am not sure!

I'm not an expert on exports...

1) But I do know that at least some of the exports shells were made of a "composite" material. They had a "texture" on the inside that resembled their fiberglass coating on the inside of their wood-fiberglass drums of the 70s, although they weren't white on the inside. I've run into people who thought they had fiberglass shells when what they had was these "composite" shells. I'm not saying yours are composite... but you can tell by looking at the edges... IF they are composite you will NOT see any plies.

2) Jammin' Sams, IMO, is very easy to work with (both his products and as a person). I've bought stuff from him many times. BUT it will depend upon what you want to do with your drums. IF you're thinking of keeping them over the long haul, this would be a way to go... BUT if you're thinking of reselling, these Pearl Exports just don't have much resale value and the cost of the wrap may end up being more than you could get out of the drums!

Hey, would sure like to see some pictures!

Hello,

if it's an Export series model with an inner layer of coating, it might be from the late 80's. The wood should be plywood. The sealing from Tama was called Zola-coating, the one from Pearl they called Acousti-coat-sealer.

As mentioned above, I wouldn't spend too much money for a wrapping, 'cause the Export series are not sought-after very much (as far as I know, the Export series was sold more than one million times!).

I know it's not worth much but I am only in the kit $30 and we are looking for a kit to use for bars and open jams. I want something that will look good but that we wouldn't be afraid to let other people use. We are also hoping to get practice rewrapping before we restore our old slingerland kit.

Upon further inspection the shells have different plies, with the outer plies being a darker wood.

I take it that they have wrap on them already... and not a wood finish.

If that is the case, the wrap will only be attached with tape at the seam (and of course attached wherever hardware is attached!), and if it's not worth saving is easily removed.

That being said, Jammin' Sam's may well be the way to go, since you have very little tied up in the kit anyway AND that you're planning on keeping and using it. Give him a call; he can explain to you the various options he has available.

Another cheaper option may be to remove the wrap and simply do some sort of wood finish on the outside.

Again, just my :2Cents:
