Pearl Forum question

Loading...

I have a young man coming to my shop tomorrow to sell me a Pearl Forum drum set that was his first kit. He is only 21 years old and with the research I did the Forum seires got started in 1997 (correct me if I am wrong). He has a 22" base, 16" floor tom. 13" tom and a 8" or 10" tom (no snare drum). Years ago he decided to remove the wraps and stain the shells, cant wait to see that! . He claims to have all the lugs, hoops and rods. He does not have the tom arms. Sounds like a good kit to try a cool finish on.

Was just wondering what people think of the Forum drums. I know they are entry level, Pearls cheepo kit so are they even worth messing with? He wants 50.00 for them but would probably take less. I would like to be fair with him beacuse he is the Grandson of a very good customer.

Thank you,

Jeff C

For $50 i don't see how you could go wrong, but that depends on his "refinishing" skills... chances are the shells will be poplar

Hi Jeff,

Well, since you are going to put a new finish on 'em, the worse the better?

I'd go $40.00 since he's missing the tom arms, they're not expensive, but not a dime a dozen either. For forty or fifty bucks, heck, as long as he has the rest of the hardware and rims / hoops, I'd do it.

He suggested using a snare stand for the 13" tom. Would it be stupid to fill the holes in the base drum and make it look like a virgin and do the stand idea for the 13? Just an idea.

Maybe better kits out there to invest your TIME into - 50$ or 40$ -still money is money- a more collectible old Pearl could certainly be found -say from before 1975. With an older Pearl all your work would = a significant increase in it`s value. I don`t think much could increase a Pearl Forum drumset's value today- it falls uncomfortably into "almost vintage" "almost cool"- I do suggest investing 100$ into something more collectible if you considering putting time into it.

I see this scenario in a bit different light given your business tie-in. A good customer will pay for many more kits. If he wants 50, tell him that you don't want to take advantage and give him 75 bucks. Even if they aren't worth that much, and that is still only 15 dollars a drum, he will tell grandpa about your fair treatment of him and that will go a long way!

25 or 30 bucks is very, very cheap advertising. The fact you mentioned the grandfather/customer situation says this definitely isn't the kit to be hardballing a price on.

have a wonderful evening

When i'm face with a situation like i would make darn sure the kid is happy. Very good customer's, what i call my A list gold customers are not easy to come by. And for 50$ for the drum kit, you will get your money back easy and you did not put a knot in your very good customer face. Every one wins.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was thinking all along of the customer relationship and would probably just give him the 50 to start with. I really wanted to hear more about the Forum series drums. One person said they are not worth screwing with. If these are anything like a set of CB700 I had then they are junk. The metal used for the lugs was like "pot metal", really brittle and breaks easy. Pearl made so many drums its hard to know which ones are good! Just want to be able to re-assemble with out a lot of problems.

Far as the price, I think the popular vote is that 50$ is good for both of us, after all he was going to throw them away anyhow.

Thanks again,

Jeff C

The only thing I would add is virgin bass drums seem to be all the rage these days, especially with younger metal players.Patching the hole may be a good selling point to an up and comming 14 year old Travis Barker clone.:2Cents:Steve B
