Pearl Fiberglass

Slingerland.

The "Fiberglass shells" were Pearls Top of the line at the time, very punchy and very loud.

Personally I prefer the Wood/Fiberglass, still pretty loud, but with a bit more tone from the wood. Non of these drums are really expensive, but in my opinion the best bang for the buck that you can find.

Billnvick.

I had no idea that there were a thicker version of the FG Shell. -Keep learning every day ;)

My thin shells however were actually fitted with Hex shaped mounts that they used from early 70's. (Not the thin hex mount from the 60's).

Did the thicker shells have the same colour on the inside? -I have heard of (but never seen) fiberglass shells with a darker/Tan colour on the inside.

Regards/

Fortissimo,

Yes, the color of the interiors were the same. The older shells were just thicker. And, I thought the change occured with the mounts, but it was earlier than that.

I'll have to check when I get home to see if I have any of the thicker shells on hand. IF I do I'll post comparison pics...

Yes, I saw that one, too.

And yes, for me he's too high. HOWEVER, just about any Pearl FG and W/FG drums I buy are going to be for re-sale, at least eventually. This set, for it's age, looks really good. And most of the hardware looks authentic to the era and appears to be in good shape as well (he does describe a couple of "upgrades").

So, if you're "collecting" these, his price for what's there and the condition it appears to be in isn't really that bad at all.

A set in the same finish sold on eBay about a year back for around the same price. It was an Art Blakely (sp?) jazz set in W/FG, with 14x18 BD and 8x12 and 14x14 toms. I remember it so well because I wanted that set pretty bad, but just couldn't go that high...
