Pearl 5x14 B4514 COB 70's Snare (Stewart Copeland's Snare)

Loading...

Hello everyone,

I am looking for the exact same snare that Stewart Copeland used. I see there have been a few posted here. I would love to find one in excellent condition. More specifically, the 70's 5x14 chrome over brass, with the vent hole towards the bottom (not middle), with the 2 screw butt plate, and Gladstone throw-off. And if it has the die-cast rim on top that he used, that would be great!

I am posting pictures of which one I am talking about. I really love this forum, I have been a lurker for years. Thank you so much! -Justin

DrumJustin!

I have the EXACT model you seek, and in near MINT condition as I was/am a HUGE Stewart Copeland fan! I saw The Police LIVE three times back in 1981/1983 during both the "Ghost In The Machine" and "Synchronicity" tours. Both times SC had "THE snare". :) My drum isn't currently for sale .. but .. I'd thought I would let you know that you would think these would be out there in greater numbers .. as they were the supplied snare drum with many of PEARL'S sets back in the day .. but they're kinda hard to find. Even more so if you want THE SC build with the lower vent and "T" butt with the Gladstone. I have found THREE of these in the past year though, so I'll keep an eye out for you. I want to mention in regard to the CAST batter hoop: As I'm sure you know, they never came that way. That was Stewart Copeland's addition/mod to the drum, and the results were legendary! I did the same with mine back in the day as I was with a band that did a few Police tunes. Point being: If/when you find one, it will most probably have the standard PEARL triple flanged batter hoop ... but you can then put on a CAST hoop, and ... voila! :)

I was sure that I had one for you...I just received a B4514 that my brother picked up for me sight unseen in another town. Turns out there are extra holes from mounting it on a snare harness (d'Oh!) that were definitely not shown in the ad. It sounds exactly the same so I'm going to keep it and play it. Here it is in last night's Québec Winter Carnaval parade (-20 C). I keep finding them though & I'll let you know if I find another.

Just for fun here's me playing a B4514 at other tunings https://open.spotify.com/artist/5Npq84ZYGO2rwT7A1Q4RWi#_=_

You are all so helpful! Thanks for keeping an eye out for me! I wonder if any more exist in excellent condition. The ones I have heard online sound wonderful.

What year was Stewart Copeland's? Was the die-cast hoop made by Pearl?

Thanks! -Justin

Hey Human71! Hope all is well with you! That's the one I am speaking of above. The ad hasn't been removed. My brother picked it up for me & unfortunately there are extra holes from mounting it on a snare harness that were totally not in pics. This was going to be my detailing job this week, but instead will be a players snare as it still sounds the same. The pic in my above post is of it being played on a float at a parade for the Quebec Winter Carnaval Saturday night at -20 C.

Drumjustin: I honestly can't find any info on the brand of the die-cast hoop on top of SC's, but most sources state that his snare-side hoop was a Pearl Super Hoop.

Regarding the CAST batter hoop on SC's PEARL B4514 ... I gently disagree with funkypoodle, as the PEARL "Superhoop" wasn't even available back during this time period .. and .. SC was NOT a PEARL endorser either. That said, I always thought his batter hoop was a Gretsch CAST hoop, which was without a doubt, THE cast hoop that most everyone used back then. The profile of SC's batter hoop seems to back that up if you compare them, especially so where the tension rods are attached. I had mine set up with a Gretsch CAST hoop back in the day .. 1980/1984 .. but for the record, PEARL did have cast hoops available too, just not the "Superhoop". Still, would have been much easier to source a Gretsch CAST hoop back then rather then the PEARL. Course, this is all conjecture!, but fun to do regardless. Whatever CAST hoop you end up with with do the job DrumJustin!, but I do believe it was a Gretsch CAST hoop on SC's B4514. As to what year was his drum? ... that's a tough one to dial in .. because .. Stewart Copeland has said in many interviews that he honestly doesn't remember just where or when he got that drum! It was given to him somewhere along the line .. so .. I have tracked this snare drum as far back as the early 70's for availability from PEARL. The drum shows up around 1975 in a PEARL catalog .. but the D4514 was available as far back as 1972! Course that one is the STEEL SHELL, but otherwise, same hardware. So ... this model was available anywhere from 1975 to 1983! Here's a pic of mine with the Gretsch CAST hoop! :)

Hey Tommy! I love how you phrased "I gently disagree with funkypoodle, as the PEARL "Superhoop" wasn't even available back during this time period". You are right! Thanks for the clarification & sorry to have added confusion to the mix.

Funky- I'm doing well man, thanks ! So you got that snare ? Nice ! Even with the extra holes, i'm sure it's still a great player's drum. I actually thought about you when i saw it ;) Oh, and don't even get me started with this weather we're having. Another 25 cm on the way for Wednesday. DOH ! I think we've already accumulated more than half of the winter's snowfall in less than 2 months. I predicted this winter to the tee simply by the crummy summer we had . Now i predict hot and muggy conditions for this summer.. Stay tuned !

It's a great snare drum. Very bright.

The last 3 photos are of the drum I sold. Funny seeing it here. Google remembers everything.
