Paiste 2002 Pre-Serial 16" Crash?

Loading...

Hello,

I was gifted a vintage Paiste 2002 16" crash. No cracks, some key holing, but intact and fine, sounds remarkable. I'm no Paiste expert, but from my research it looks to be a pre-serial 2002, so 1971, early 72. Has all of its natural patina, feels wonderful to play. Note: it seems, due to no serial number on the cymbal, the previous owner did engrave one, above the logo, on the top side. I've attached some pictures; 3 top and 2 bottoms.

My questions, for you knowledgeable Paiste people are:

1) Is it in fact, a pre-serial?

2) What's this cymbal's rarity?

3) Value? (in USD dollars).

I look forward to learning more about it.

Thanks!

I'd head over to the "Paiste-Only" website,

Once on it click on Paiste Wiki. There were some pre-serial 2002's made extremely rare value who knows?,

It appears&sounds like it could be either a prototype,

Or 1st month or someone at Paiste forget to emboss the serial number,

Because WHY would anyone want to remove it?,

& it'd destroy & ruin the cymbals appearance if they did. Also it could be made just right after the GB's (Giant Beats ) were discontinued,

But even the last of the '71 black label GB's had serial numbers a mystery! .

Probably the most knowledgeable source is member Zenstat. He is a Paiste-"phile's" Paistephile, and has an outstanding sales database/catalog.

Sorry but I can't really help much with pricing. In terms of Paiste pricing I track and analyze 602s, Sound Creations, and Traditionals. I haven't looked at the Paiste B8 offerings in terms of pricing.

The Pasite Only Wiki shows a 2002 with the characteristics of yours:

http://www.paiste-only.com/paistewiki/index.php?title=2002

and it gives those years for the pre serials as 1971-1972, which fits with all the work I know about on the beginning of 602 serial numbers.

The very first 2002s had the emboss logo framed in a box (maybe those were the prototypes or the initial production cymbals from 1971) This cymbal was most likely a first half of 1972 as it has the big Paiste logo on the bottom. Something the 1971s might not of had.
