Painting Fiberglass Shells

Loading...

Hi All. I Recently Purchased An Early 70's Pearl Fiberglass Kit. I Removed All The Covering And Planned On Painting The Shells With Auto Body Paint (60's Ford Robin Egg Blue). I Went To The Auto Body Paint Store Today And...wow! That Is An Extremely Expensive Process Of Primer, Paint, And Clear Coat. They Were Telling Me I Needed An Etching Primer To Put On Before Applying The Paint, And The Primer Is Veeeery Expensive. Has Anyone Done This Before? I Sure Would Like Some Advice On The Best Route To Painting These Shells.

I Suppose I Could Recover Them, But Covering A Fiberglass Kit Can Rob The Shell Of A Lot Of That Great Sound.

Any Ideas?

Handled by an expert, the painted shells will look exceptional. I would go with a metallic as I've seen this done on guitars with fabulous results and that's how I prefer my cars. How expensive is painting? If you had someone recover the kit $1,500 is not off the charts.

Also. Having played the Pearl fiberglass drums, we are not talking about the most resonant drums in the world in the first place. It is also a kit with not much vintage demand. Whatever you put into it will be to have your own personalized player and you will probably never get your money out of it.

$1500 !!! Man, I know prices of everything has gone up, but I haven't had to pay that much for recovering two kits! I just had one recovered last week. I didn't spend more than $400. Anyway, the paint, etching primer, and clearcoat is going to cost just under $300. That's not including having someone paint them. I know there is not a high demand for them, but I have found people will pay what someone is asking for them if they are in good shape. I've seen fb kits in good shape go for as little as $200 because that was what the seller wanted to $2000. I was surprised to find out how many studio drummers use them. I know one studio drummer who has two pearl fiberglass shell kits with Gretsch hardware! (he has a Gretsch deal. SHHHHhh)

So 300 doesn't sound like so much.
