Oyster red Presidents

Loading...

Well gentlemen, I ended up trading my copper sparkle kit that I just finished for these Pearl Presidents with oyster red wraps. They are in pretty good condition. The worst thing is an extra hole where someone installed a new mount for the bass spurs (legs) . One of the origionals must have broken so someone mounted another leg mount instead of getting a new one. And, some of the bass drum claws are pretty rusty. But the rest of the chrome is really good. The insides of the drums are like new, shinney screws and washers! The shells are not wood they are fiberglass, I think. The snare has ten lugs and again, like new interior. I think they will clean up nice. Even has the origional front head on the bass drum with the President logo.

I think it was a good trade!

Check out the pics,

Thank you,

Jeff C

Now here is the bad stuff. See pictures of the hole. The hole is where the correct leg mount should go. So when I get that part and remove the incorrect mount I will have a small hole where it was. The middle picture shows the leg mount hole from the inside of the shell. The worst of the rust is on the bass drum claws. Not all of the claws are this rusty.

Thank you!

Very COOL!

I've never played one of these kits, but a number of folks on the list sing their praises... I do like that wrap!

Those claws will clean up, but if the rust is deep the chrome will be gone.

I think it was a great trade, frankly...

Sweet! These shells are made from a material they called "phenolic". The other type of Pearl high-end, non-wood shells are a grey-green-ish fiberglass. I think ya done good! And once you clean and tune that beast of a snare, you are in for a real eye-opening experience. It will take peoples' heads off at 50 paces...

As I posted earlier, the "bb" era of oysters was never one of my fave wrap colors, no matter Ludwig (I simply LOATHE Ludwig "bb" oyster wraps, the most hideous in my eyes...) or Pearl, or anyone else for that matter, but still, that is a rare wrap and those appear to be in pretty good shape. The snare alone is probably more rare than you can imagine. Most of those kits would have had the top of the line Jupiter or at least the 10 lug COB. Pearl really made some great snares back in the late 60s and early 70s, which is what this kit is. They made about 4-5 really top notch, low buck snares and many people today still swear by them.

A lot of guys come across them and think "Pearl crap", you know, the drum-snobs. When they hear one properly tuned, from a distance, they run and ask what the dude(tte) is playing, and when they find out, they want to test drive it and then the hunt is on. Just goes to show you what those sneaky little barstids were up to in the 60s and 70s, showing the world you can make a great snare for cheap. My Star COS won't hold a candle to a Pearl COS of the same era, as long as it is an 8 lug, and it is on the top tier of the Star stable of COS snares (#8356, I think is the model).

nice drums for years all i played were a 69 pearl kit with pearl cos snare every one loved the sound it was a hitter

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I started cleaning the 13 and it is looking good my friend! I see why you love these MIJ drums. Not my favorite wrap I ever seen but I think its cool and so different from my other kits. I read that the Presidents were Pearls first pro line of drums starting in 1966.

Thank you,

Jeff C

Jeff,

Well worth the trip, I see. Congrats!

IF you're interested, I could send you a small piece of that wrap if you wanted to try & patch those holes. I can't guarantee it would match as what I have is pretty faded. PM me a mailing address and appr. size you need and it's yours (this is wrap removed from a 16x16). Merry Christmas!

Also, I have 8x12 & 9x13 shells (same wrap & same shell construction) if you're interested. I don't have any hardware for them, just the shells. Make me an offer; or maybe we could work out some sort of trade for something. If you're anything like me you've got more "stuff" sitting around than you know what to do with!!

jonnistix,

Well said.

And, I'm not sure what has attracted the attention, but the market for Pearls of this era (late 60s thru the 70s) is beginning to pick up (as well as any of the Pearl or Star stencils of the 60s). I've moved more Pearl stuff in the last month than I had in the last year.

It could be that they're finally being appreciated for what they are. Tayedrummertom has been telling me that for a couple of months, anyway, while I'm remained sceptical. But maybe he's right!

It could be that they're a bargain compared to the price of "same age" Ludwigs (and I did drop my asking prices).

It could just be the economy has picked up enough that this is just a "Christmas" boost.

But, whatever the reason, I'm glad to see it. It's about time!

Bill
