Oh the humanity!

I can only speak for myself, but I usually don’t mind a good rewrap. It’s just that with this particular type of pattern it’s weird, like looking at the ocean and see it repeating, like a glitch in the matrix. I used to have a blue oyster 60’s Ludwig kit and no picture could ever do the real thing justice, there’s a shimmer in it, just lovely.

Love rewrapped kits and originals too. If wrap is needed, I say go for it. Sometime it get too ratty looking, cracked, crazed and literally falling off. Done it many times. I just thought it was interesting that this particular wrap repeats. Still looks nice to me.

I agree, I think it is Bum wraps. I rewrapped two Ludwig Rocker snares in the BUMWRAPS oyster blue and it is a reasonable match to my 65 Super Classics

Sometimes you really have no option. I used bumwrap citrus mod to hoops for my original 1971 citrus mod set. The set was found with incorrect maple hoops and I wanted a factory original restore. Bumwrap was perfect as the wrap they made matched the original very closely.

I also wanted an oyster black Ringo snare to match my set and made one from a drum that was already rewrapped. The rewrap was oyster black from the 90's and it didn't look very good. The muffler was also in the wrong spot so I moved the muffler, plugged holes and rewrapped in Bumwrap oyster black. I'm pretty happy with it.

Those oyster and mod wraps look great. Those are tough ones to reproduce, no question about it. I read that the most difficult part is that they cannot use the same materials due to fire hazards associated to the original stuff.

There was a shop owner in Beverly, MA a number of years ago - Joe Winokur. He bought a Rogers kit belonging to the drummer for Teddy and the Panda's that got caught in the fire at Lenny's on the Pike in nearby Peabody, MA back in the early 70's. They were a one-hit wonder band that opened for a lot of the bigger acts. The wrap had melted from the kit but the kit itself survived. I think it was a ripple wrap. you can just about make it out in the attached photo. At the time, very few wraps were available and Joe did it over in a basic maroon wrap. But it was amazing that the wrap melted and the kit didn't burn up too. Credit to the Peabody Fire Department I suppose.

I've burned stubborn wrap off many drums. Old wrap burns so fast that it's over and done before it can really do any damage to the shell. Often with wrap that is glued on extra well (Slingerland seems to have used the best glue) it does less damage to the shell to burn the wrap than to try to peel it which often takes chunks of the outer mahogany ply with it.

That wrap is really not even close.

A shame, old "oyster" pearl wraps are beautiful.

The "second generation" oyster wraps were/are referred to as "bowling ball" finishes.

I'm going to try and piece together an oyster blue pearl Ludwig kit and have bought a tom off ebay. It hasn't been shipped yet so I can't do a pic.

If anyone is curious to see it search for; Vintage Ludwig Transition Badge Blue Oyster 13in on ebay. He used all caps.

I'm not sure how long it will take to find these drums.
