Over my head! SuperSensitive snare

I bought a badly flaking Supra Supersenstive from an ebay seller, because I get a kick out of little mechanical stuff.

Well. I tried the snare out, thought it sounded great. Dropped the snares, and it sound....just the same. The carriage would drop, but not the wires.

So...there's a small bolt and nut sticking up from the metal pieces at the end of the snare wires. It looks like at one point, instead of replacing the snares, someone drilled out the rivet on the old ones, and attached the 'regular' wires to the metal tab at the end of the snare wires.

I'm thinking replacing the snares is plan A, BUT, here's the problem:

I can't figure out how to get the snare wire off! It almost looks like the whole things has to be disassembled, but THAT can't be right.

This has probably been around before...my search didn't find it...so there may be a link. Or a 12 step support group!

How is it done?

Well, it does help, for sure.

But are there other resources on the Super Sensitive in general? I think I can use all the help I can find!

Bill, Just pay for shipping your drum back and forth and I'll be happy to set it up for you for free. Glad to do it for you. They're great snare drums, you'll love it. I've sold a few of these SS's here at VDF, most recently to Kevin about a year ago or so. Ask him about the set-up on the drum when he got it from me.

Send it to me, if the parts are all there and working, and the shell is 'in-round' I'll put it right for you. I pm'd you a link to a set of 'appropriate' snares for the drum. Buy em and send the new wires along with the drum.

Done deal... check your pm's.

I just realized your question went unanswered...

> How is it done?

To remove the snares; 1. Disengage the strainers. 2. Loosen the tension wheels on the strainer until the end plate of the snares can be removed from the bracket that holds it on to the mechanism. Once the wheels are loosened enough, the snares will fall off the ends into your hand!

Yes, that should work...except that the snare wires are not the real deal. It's a regular set of 14" snares, connected to the corect ends by a small nut and bolt. The nut and bolt is the problem: they are jammed in the space in the rim!

I'm going to cut the wires -- the head has a tear anyway, so I can't really do any damage.

Thanks, Mr. PS...

I have a super sensitive strainer too that I am actually trying to mount on a wood shell, but I am having problems getting it to line up properly. if anyone could give me a hand I could really use a hand figuring out what the issue is!
