I remember getting a USB wifi device for an old mac... think I was still running OS9 at the time, so you should be able to hook something up. Google it maybe...

I do not see ANY reason you would need a new hard drive unless the current one is bad which is unlikely because it works now, right? If it was going bad usually you will hear a clicking noise, or you will just lose your data and it will crash.

I am not very good with MAC as my classes were on PC and that's all I have ever used however the same basic principles apply. You should be able to just throw the cd in and upgrade without a problem.

Do you want me to look around and see if I can find one for 10.2.8 so you wouldn't have to upgrade? I am sure I could it if you want.

Alright allow me to go a little more in depth in it and maybe I can help you understand. A hard drive is a very very basic machine. It works by magnets and little charges the head puts on the magnetic material disk. Depending on its charge it is either 1 or 0. These 1s and 0s are stored on "sectors" on the hard drive. Your average hard drive has billions of them. When you listen to your music it is actually millions of these little 1s and 0s and when put together in a specific it creates the music.

Another thing to point out is a hard drive is non-volatile meaning that after the power goes out the charges remain on the disk for many many years.

Okay so when your computer is on it is constantly writing data, moving data, deleting data even know you don't notice it. Over time it can get quite cluttered, files are all over the place and that 1 picture you have might be on 5 or even 100 different places on the hard drive. Defraging a hard drive takes all these files and puts them back into order so they are in 1 piece all in the same spot so it can be accessed faster.

Okay so with that said when you go to reinstall an operating system and such you usually have to format. It is a simple fast format and all that does is clear out the file table for the hard drive. That means that all your old pictures and everything is still there but the hard drive doesn't know it and it can be written over.(Main reason you can recover data after it has been deleted).

So after you format the hard drive thinks it is all clear and then proceeds to upgrade and write new data over the old data.

Personally when I redo my operating system I do what is called a low level format; it is a formatting process that takes hours but it writes 0s to all the sectors on the hard drive thus deleting every single once of data that was ever there.

And that is my huge drawn out crazy explanation of why you don't need a new hard drive. If you have any questions or I wasn't clear on something let me know.

Blair - If it's an older imac, you can only upgrade to 10.4. 10.5 and above is written for the newer IBM chip and associated architecture. The older macs have the G series chips in them and they won't run 10.5 or above.

I have an older G5 tower with the dual G5 chips and I'm running 10.4 with no problems or crashes. I 'think' that's why some people are telling you not to install 10.5 on your machine. Get a copy of 10.4, install it on your imac and you should be good to go. 10.4 is compatible with your system.
