Options for this very rough Supra Last viewed: 3 hours ago

This tired old goat came along with a set I picked up earlier in the year. Keystone badge with no serial number. The finish is flaking off - sort of like the needles on Charley Brown's Christmas tree.... Chrome on the lugs is also badly pitted. The only good thing is the inside of the red BB muffler!!! The original strainer and butt plate are long gone, but I do have replacements.

What are my options to bring it back to life? (most likely to sell or leave in my off-site practice space)

Thanks in advance.

Have it blasted and then powder coated the color of your choice. Or the expensive route, have it completely re-chromed.

Having it blasted, left alone then swap out to some tube lugs.

All kinds of choices...

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

What BBK said is on the money... I've never done that to a 'good' snare, but I did do something similar to a MIJ six lug chrome snare that had a gob of rust. I think the drum had sat outside for a year or more. The original lugs were garbage, it was a real mess. Somewhere, I picked up a bunch of cheap tube lugs, so I decided to try something. I sanded the rust off the shell, primed the heck out of it with cheap flat white spray paint (99 cents a can) and then put on a few coats of Krylon cherry red from a spray can. Then a few coats of high gloss clear lacquer. Cleaned and painted the inside gloss white with the same type of cheap white spray paint. I polished up some of the tube lugs, buffed all the rust and what remained of the chrome off the rims, then primed and painted them gloss black... it looked really nice. Didn't make it sound any better but hey...

The darn thing looked great!

BBK is right. Here's a 1967 I did with tube lugs and single flanged hoops. It's now one of my favorite snares.

Check out the threads listed below.

Aluminum is one of the most reflective metals - Purdie blasted and polished his Supra to a high relection - it turned out awesome. Also at the end of the thread JD15 did a real nice treatment as well putting a swirl pattern on his shell then doing a transparent red lacquer over it.

Drumguy60 "de-chromed" and did a light polsih on his shell...
