Just curious to hear some opinions regarding a couple of kits that i'm thinking of buying. Both kits are new "vintage retro" reissue kits, and both sound phenomenal to me, or at least from what i've heard on Youtube with good audio and good Sennheiser ear buds..;)

First kit -

Ludwig Club Date Vintage model form 2016 in 12-14-20

Second kit-

Pearl Wood-Fiberglass kit in same sizes.

Both seem like a perfect fit for my cover band which covers classic rock, pop, RnB, Funk, and current top 40. The whole purpose was to have a versatile kit in versatile sizes that have a good tuning range and are easy to transport. I guess at this point it's all subjective and is a matter of personal preference, but i'd still like to hear what you guys think of both kits for my current musical situation..

Another upside is that i've made friends with the Ludwig rep here in Quebec, and he said he would be able to meet my needs should i choose the Ludwig. This is thanks to a long time friend of mine who works at the drum shop in my city.. So what do you guys think ?

Any and all opinions are appreciated, as well as critiques on both kits, which i think is very important in choosing a workhorse drum kit that you plan on having for a while..Here are a couple of high quality vids from Drum Center of Portsmouth to hear what they sound like.

From what i hear, the Ludwigs may be my choice, but i'm not crazy about the flimsy looking spurs..

I also have the opportunity to pick up the Pearl on special for $400 less.. The Pearl that's on special at my drum shop is in the Antique Gold finish, which i think is just classy and visually stunning. It's gonna be a tough choice.

Thanks to all in advance !

Rob

If you go by the vids ... easily Ludwig.

They sound far richer, have longer resonance (which you can of course lessen), & simply sound better. I have a buddy who loves the new Ludwigs (word of mouth). I'm a 60's guy so that's where it's at for me.

I personally have no interest in new or non-American drums. I love vintage drums and only play vintage drums.

My opinion is similar to jerrysterken's: my preferences are vintage and American...although I do like new drums as well (just not the price). If I had the budget for new drums, I'd opt for a custom-designed kit from one of the multitude of quality American manufacturers that exist nowadays. And I have little interest in a new "vintage" kit, although I do like the looks of the Ludwig New Club Date. But I'd still rather have vintage, meaning if I were in the market for a Ludwig Club Date, I'd get an actual vintage Ludwig Club Date, not one from last year.

Lastly, I'm pretty much "Pearled-out" after owning three entry- to mid-level Pearl kits over the years. They served me well throughout the '80s and '90s, but Pearl just doesn't "do it" for me anymore.

But really, my opinion means jack. Go with your gut, no one can tell you what you prefer but you. I'd visit the store and try them out for yourself before pulling the trigger, though. YouTube videos can only do so much.

Vintage kits:
1969 Rogers Holiday - black diamond pearl (20/16/13/12)
196x Star (Lyra/Majestic) - blue sparkle pearl (22/14/13) Restoration Project
1987 Pearl KC-3500 - jet black (22/16/13/12)
Not-so-vintage kits:
2007 Hart Dynamics Professional 6.4 e-kit / Roland TDW-20
Snares:
60s Gretsch 5x14 maple WMP / 68 Ludwig 5x14 Supraphonic / 93 Pearl 3x14 Free Floating brass piccolo / 60s Star (Lyra) 5x14 luan blue sparkle pearl / 87 Pearl 6.5x14 steel

They both sound good to me. I believe I've seen the Pearls sell for a lot less than the Ludwigs. For instance, this seller has a used Pearl FG/WD kit. Good guy and he works for Pearl in Nashville.https://nashville.craigslist.org/msg/6041561929.html

I'm very biased, but the Ludwigs sound like Ludwigs to me and what I prefer. I'd get the Ludwigs.

If it's not 1960's , oh well

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I love Ludwig. But if I was buying a gigging kit that was on the smallish side, I'd buy a Sonor kit. I cannot believe how good my son's Sonor kit sounds with the 16" bass drum. Fantastic. I got it for 500 including starter cymbals and Gibraltar stands. It sounds GREAT.

Just another option.

late 60s Ludwig Standard kit (blue strata)
late 60s Star kit (red satin)

I really like the new Ludwig stuff! They've really stepped it up with the new Atlas lines of hardware. If I see in the market for a new "modern" kit, I'd be looking at the Classic Maple.

Those Club Dates sound great!

1965 Ludwig Acrolite
