Well, thats the exact setup im using. 4 rack toms, 3 crashes and my ride. The hats are off to the side, considered neccesity. I also have my china off to the side with a 9.5" Zilbel stacked on top. We do practice in a small room, so I have taken out one tom/1 cymbal for practice, but i am also a heavy hitter as well.

The funny thing is is that when I picked him up from his other bands practice room, his other drummer was using the Jordison Signature kit from Pearl, and had about 5 or 6 crashes across the front rack, 2 chinas, one on each side, 2 rides, one on each side also, along with main hats and auxillary hats. I dont know if hes trying to get me to scale down because of the different styles of the 2 bands, (them=deathcore/deathmetal; us=hardcore) but i didnt take anything to heart, just thought it was weird that he would tell me conflicting things/have conflicting opinions.

I mean, im far from Bozzio, but i like to have different types of cymbals for accenting different parts of songs. And im also not a fan of crashing my 1st or 2nd run 20" Sabian HH rock ride either. :D

From Sonorforlife2000

Hello all. My band recently lost our guitarist and our bassist, and we have hired fill ins for a few upcoming shows because these are shows that we absolutely DONT want to cancel. The guitarist is of semi local legend, being in a few well known local/touring bands. Anyways,we were having a conversation about the amount of cymbals I use in my kit. I was told the amount of cymbals should match the amount of toms/1 cymbal per drum. Is this just an opinion? Does anyone else follow this? Any insight would be great. Thanks!

That's ridiculous, tell Mr. Know it all to shut up and play his guitar.

If a fellow musician wants you to use less sonic and/or stage space with the cymbals, he should come out and say so instead of speaking in riddles.

Out of curiosity, how many pedals is this guitarist using? Does he gig with only one guitar?

Keith Moon didn't follow the 1 cymbal-1 drum rule.

When I'm rocking, I usually use six cymbals plus hats. I usually reduce to three or four when I'm bluesin', but I've gigged with hats and a crash/ride.

The music will tell you what you need.
