Opinions: Rogers BDP Kit - 13" w/BB Lugs and 22" w/Early BB Lugs

Loading...

I need some opinions on the following original owner drums I looked at tonight.

14 x 22 Black Diamond Pearl Bass Drum w/Eagle Badge and 16 separate tension early style Bread and Butter Lugs, Swiv-o-matic spurs, Joseph Rogers, Inc. label with Model: Holiday and S/N - B 2614, black interior paint, solid wooden hoops (no inlay), no cracks in the wrap, shell wood is 3-ply (maple/mahogany/maple) with large re-rings. I'm guessing mid-50's.

9 x 13 Black Diamond Pearl Tom w/Eagle Badge and 6 separate tension 2nd style Bread and Butter Lugs, label missing, black interior paint, no cracks in the wrap, but some snare rash in two locations, shell wood is 3-ply (maple/mahogany/maple) with re-rings. I'm guessing late-50's or early-60's.

Hardware:

Rogers High-hat that came with the bass drum

Rogers trap kit - wood block, cow bell, hoop mount

Rogers hoop mount for tom

Rogers drum throne

Cymbals:

Super thin Zildjian 16.5" crash - warped, no cracks, no keyholes

Super thin Zildjian 18" crash - warped, no cracks, no keyholes

Thin Zildjian 20" sizzle ride - slight keyhole, 1 small flea bite, no cracks

A lot, but not all, of the Bread and Butter lugs on the bass drum are cracked. Tom also has hairline cracked lugs, but not as bad as the bass drum. The tom's wrap is BDP, but it looks like a different type of wrap material from the bass drum. The original owner bought them new and played them up until he was 81 years old. He died around 1991. It also looks like he added the tom at a later date. There was a matching snare drum that came with the kit, but it was lent out to a family member in the 80's. His daughter is looking to sell them now.

I know the details about the Bread and Butter lugs, so getting replacements would be a fortune and the total cost to bring this kit back to life would probably be fairly high. I'd hate to see this kit parted out. Even though it's been well played, it's got some serious mojo from the original owner.

What would be a good price for the two drums?

Can you fix warped cymbals?

How much would the hardware be worth?

Thanks,

-Tim

This is a tough one. The drawbacks for me would be:1. the mis-match of the "clubdate" style tom and the standard bass drum. 2. the set is just two drums and a throne. 3. The B+B style lugs are awful. The cowbell/woodblock set up and the warped cymbals aren't worth much. I wouldn't spend more than $200/$250 for everything. Maybe you could sell the warped cymbals and cowbell/woodblock to a dixieland drummer, sell the two drums and ride cymbal separately and turn a little profit. Good luck.

Seems worth saving to me. I agree, the kit has some serious mojo. Everything that hardbopman said is true, but again I think it's the story behind the drums that makes them worthwhile. Yes, it would cost a lot to make them playable, as I assume you'd want period cymbal stands. And maybe find a floor tom. Bet they'd sound great with the proper restoration. I would offer about $300 myself, with the caveat that the daughter see if she can get that snare back!

Good luck. Tough decision I know.

Well,

If the cyms are 50/60s there worth $350 on there own period.!

If not more..?

The drums are another / $300 easily.

So, if I were standing there / I'ld look at buying it all for $400/$450Max..

Sell off any cyms I don't like and reinvest the $ into another drum...then some B/B lugs..

The rivet ride is worth @$150 on the open market / both Thin Crashes are worth $125/150 each because of the age/weight.

Just my thoughts..

But I'm from Canada..eh?Storm Trooper

Thanks for the input, so far.

Not sure I want to take on this project. The lug issue is the biggest show stopper. Even repairing the best of the lugs and purchasing repo's would cost a fortune. Then there's the fact that it really is only an unmatched two piece kit.

Based on the bass drum and it's label/serial number, what year do you think it was made? Isn't that a pretty low S/N for a Holiday bass drum.

When I say the crash cymbals are warped, I mean Zildjian ZXT Trashformer warped. They don't sound as harsh as the Trashformer, but they produce a washy sound. Even though they might be from the 50's/60's, would they still be worth $125 each being so warped?

I think there is at least one original Rogers cymbal stand included, a WFL snare stand, another flat base cymbal stand and the hi-hat stand is identical to the one in the 1957 Holiday catalog.

After looking at the three different cymbal stamps and the dating guides, I think one crash cymbal might be from the 60's, one crash from the 40's and the sizzle ride is from the 50's.

Crash #1 - 3 dots in the "U" with dot/dot/dash/dash underneath, large "I" in ZILDJIAN

Crash #2 -double stamp "GENUINE TURKISH CYMBALS MADE IN USA", missing 3 dots from the "U", small "i" in ZILDJIAN

Ride - ZILDJIAN Co stamp is missing center letters, three dots missing from the "U"

Yup..

sounds like the ride might be a trans stamp..

you have about $350 in cyms there easily..

I'm sure theres a way to flatten out the warpin..

Thanks for all of the information.

Who manages the Rogers Hardware link in the Vintage Drum Guide?

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/rogers_hardware.html

I noticed there isn't much info on 50's Rogers drums. I would be willing to collect more information and take more pictures of the bass drum to document this period of Rogers drums.

Thanks,

Tim
