Opinion on price of Ludwigs...

Here I go again...

The seller would do $900 outside ebay. I dont think I would pay that much but want opinions. He said they have the reinforcement rings... so that would make these 3 ply, correct?

That set's well over 1k already and it's got 6 days left. Crazy!

Vintage Drums and Gas seem to be increasing in price at about the same rate lately. I just paid $3.95/gal for plus, premium is up to $4.19 by me. Ouch!

Keep an eye out for bargains, even on ebay. Look for items listed with bad photos and misspellings, and auctions that end in the middle of the day or middle of the night.

I just found an old Ludwig set for less than $600, with some extra "stuff" that will probably sell for a few hundred. Haven't received them yet, but, after I clean them up an buy some missing parts, I'll probably have a nice 22, 13, 16 3 ply set for around $5-600 total.

Look for steals on Slingerlands, too.

Where did you grab that deal? I am always looking for a deal or someone listing something they aren't aware of the value of. What you described above would be the ideal situation for me.

669.99 Have to see what the packing and shipping is going to be.. It's not far from me, should be 1 day UPS ground. Will make arrangements on Monday... I got my Ludwigs!! Need to date them now, looking like mid to late 70's from what I can tell from the serials.

I feel I did ok, a bargain? Not so much. But I will probably sell the Supra or the 5x14 I already have, depending on the condition. I should make back 250 - 300 on that so I think it's good in that regard. It includes a Bass and floor tom case which is nice too.

Thanks to everyone for all their input.

Great job. I don't think those seams are too bad. It's a very common occurrence with that era of wrapped shells -different glue that tended to shrink over time and pull the wrap with it in the process. I think you could probably re-glue the seams or get them professionally re-glued if you aren't sure about doing it yourself...or just leave them if they aren't curling up. The wrap looks nice and white so it probably indicates that the drums were kept indoors in a shady room...probably a hobby kit that didn't get played too much.

They are definitely a matched kit with those serial numbers in sequence. The Supra looks pretty good (you would be surprised how well they clean up!), so I would keep it with the rest of the kit -unless you have another one in better shape with closer sequence serial numbers...Burger Kin

The only criticism (if you want to call it that) I would have, personally, is with the larger sizes. I am a jazz drummer and I prefer the smaller sized shells...but like I say...that's just me.

I think you did very well for that price to get a matched set of 3-ply vintage blue and olive badge (the pointy ones) Ludwig drums in WMP that seems t be very white.S/H is probably going to be a bit pricey because of the larger sized boxes required to pack them.

Let us know when you get them and we'll take a closer look!Burger Kin

Congratulations! I think you got a steal on those. A B/O badge WMP 14x24 is a rare bird, and quite desirable because of Buddy (although I think his were 6 ply). If it had an 8x12 I would be begging to buy it from you to complete my WMP Jazzette kit!

As far as the seams, most 70's 2nd generation WMP seams look like that. I've seen so many I just consider it to be part of that era, kind of like lifted seams on RB Gretsch. You can actually use some Oops or Goof Off and get rid of the brown lines of glue residue fairly easily. Just be glad they aren't riveted!

For a date I would put them around 1975 or 1976. As a configuration I would either consider it a Big Beat with custom ordered larger sizes, or a Pro Beat minus the 16x18.

Have you considered driving up there to get them? I've driven to CT for drums many times...it's a nice drive, and worth it to save the shipping cost.
