One Way Out

Loading...

Here's our take on The Allman Brothers One Way Out at our last gig. As we were learning the song, I wasn't sure what I would do in the middle drum break, seeing as how they had two drummers. I started checking out cover versions on YouTube to get some ideas. Low and behold, I found a version by The Monday Night Band featuring non other than The great Bun E. Carlos. Now I'm no Bun E, but he gave me some good ideas and I tried to make them my own. Thank you Bun E, you inspired me to do something I'd not tried before. I hope we did it justice.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I want to clarify something, in no way was I trying to compare myself to Bun E. Carlos, if you've never seen The Monday Night Band play this song, I suggest you look it up, it's great. Bun E is so smooth and his tempo is spot on, unlike mine, that's something I've been conscious of and working on. I saw his video and thought it was cool how he went into a little solo as opposed to just playing the straight beat. I took the idea and went from there. In all the years I've been gigging, there really wasn't an opportunity for me to have a solo, so this is kinda new to me.

Btw, that's my mixed Ludwig, Slingerland and Gretsch kit. I sold everything but the Slingerland 6 lug wmp snare, I love that thing.

In my opinion, you did a fantastic job, johnnyringo! I've been playing for fifty years and you certainly can teach this old dog a lot of new tricks! Your beat throughout the song was comparable to a metronome and your solo was amazing! Your work is impeccable! All I can say is that you are a hell of a drummer, sir!!!

Brian

Just a drummer who loves all things about vintage drums! Nothing more, nothing less.
