Looking for advice on the value of this drum as well as offers.
NOTE: PLEASE LOOK AT FIRST REPLY FOR CLARIFICATION ON THIS DRUM - Tommy has done a great job of helping me understand the origins of the drum - THANKS!
I am considering selling my 1980 Buddy Rich Snare Drum.
This drum is not only completely original, but it is a one-of a kind.
These were 5-ply (when 5-ply were really thick plies) maple drums, natural finish with the TDR strainers.
What makes this a one-o-a-kind drum? Well: In the late 70's, early 80's, Slingerland created a drum to replace their Radio King snares. Supposedly (if you believe Slingerland) this was built for Buddy Rich and has his endorsement (right around the time Buddy started using Fibes snares in concert!!!). But Slingerland's quality control was slipping. I could not keep the drum in tune! Every time I tuned it, I would play and a few minutes later the tuning at each tension rod would be different! I took it back to my teacher and master technician,m Charlie Tappan in Highland Park New Jersey. When he took it apart he found that some lug holes had been drilled twice, and the snare beds were horrible.
Charlie had Slingerland send a new shell - undrilled and without a snare bed. He was a master at rebuilding drums and rebuilt hundreds of Radio Kings. Charlie created this drum for me and it is perfect. Everything is original, including the snares (except the heads, of course).
I am entertaining offers. You may submit an offer here that is not binding. I will be putting up pics soon.
NOTE: PICS BELOW SHOW DRUM UNCLEANED - SORRY, IT NEEDS A GOOD CLEANING
