One of a kind Joe Montineri 6 ply w/rings

Loading...

This is a one of a kind, one owner kit made by renowned drum maker Joe Montineri. The kit was made to replicate the vintage three-ply drum sets of the 50's and 60's and has a true vintage sound. The shells are 3 ply Maple, Poplar Mahogany with reinforcement rings and the lugs are replicas of vintage Radio King style mini beaver tail lugs. The floor tom leg holders are also patterned after the beaver tail lug design and are unlike any that I have seen before and have not been used on any other of his kits to my knowledge. The burgundy sparkle wrap in absolutely beautiful with no scratches, scuffs, dings or dents and the chrome looks brand new, on a scale of one to ten this is about as close to a perfect ten as you are ever going to get.

The kit comes with a 20" x 14", bass drum with a rail consolet, 12" x 8" rack tom with rail mount bracket, 14" x 15" floor tom, 16" x 16" floor tom and a 6.5" x 14" matching snare. Also included is a clear NOMO finish protector on the 12" tom to prevent snare rash on the kit. The kit is being sold as a shell pack and the snare drum stand shown is not included with the sale. If you want that vintage sound in a one of a kind custom kit then don't pass this up. $2700.00 + shipping.

Beautiful kit.

Thanks, it sounds as good as it looks. Apparently Joe put round over bearing edges on the batter sides of the drums and 45 degree edges on the resonant side for warmth and sustain.

That us indeed a beautiful kit. While subjective, can you compare the tone quality of this kit vs. the standard kits of the 60's? There was a thread regarding modern vs vintage drums that included a lot of comments about the age of the wood and the fact that it was old growth to begin with that lead to the warm quality of the sound. I am curious as to how a modern kit manufactured in a vintage way stacks up.

Also, I wonder where the floor tom and bass drum brackets came from? I've not seen those before. What a great looking kit.

Giving this an honest and objective opinion and doing a straight up comparison to some other vintage kits that have come through my shop I will say that this is pretty close. (For the record I have spent quite a few hours enjoying this little kit while it is still in my hands.) There is slightly more warmth to the older vintage kits which I attribute to the age of the wood and it have 60 or more years to dry out at this point depending on the kit but other than that, the tone quality and sound are very close to the vintage Ludwig & Slingerland kits I have played. I think that Joe nailed it on the construction using the Maple, Poplar, Mahogany combination with the maple reinforcement rings so he was constructing the shell pretty much the some way those companies would have been making their own shells back in the 50" & 60's. I, as a rule, have not been a big user or fan of 20" bass drums (Not a small guy) but this one definitely gives me the warm and fuzzy feeling I get when playing one of my vintage kits. The rack tom and floor toms don't sing out any more or any less than the vintage drums of the same size I have compared them too and the snare drum is a complete warmth monster with huge fat sound to it. It's kits like this that come through my hands every once in a while that make it hard to sell some times. I was tempted to hold onto this one but I have enough drums of my own at the moment.

I know that the kit is about 6 - 7 years old and the previous owner had it custom made but never gigged with it and as far as I can see there is not a mark, blemish, scratch ding or dent anywhere on this kit. I also know that he paid just North of $3700.00 so I think that the price is very reasonable.

I am not sure where he got the hardware, a couple of people at the PA drum show mentioned a company that they thought made it but I can't remember what the company was but one of the people talking to me about it said that the mounts on the floor toms and bass drums were about $100.00 each. I have no way to confirm that either though. The one bit of confirmation I did get was that after buying the hardware for this kit, Joe wasn't able to get them again so this kit is a one off. Happy to answer any other questions. If anyone has any information on the mounting hardware and who made it please feel free to chime in.

I chatted with Joe today... he said the hardware was courtesy of Ron Dunnett! Yeah, THAT Ron Dunnett! Joe said it was indeed a "one of". He also mentioned that the price you have them up for is EXCELLENT. They cost substantially MORE than that originally. He also told me about the Burgandy Sparkle wrap. It was a "one run" for him specifically... and then Gretsch ordered some... and the rest we know. BEAUTIFUL drums.. and .. Joe's attention to detail is reknown. As close to perfection as one can get.

Tommy, thanks for this information and the information you sent in the PM, greatly appreciated.

I want to point out to anyone interested that this is actually a 6 ply kit and not 3 as I was told by the previous owner. If you are interested in seeing additional photos please contact with an e-mail address and I will be happy to send them.
