Olympic snare restoration

Loading...

and finally got some time to rehab my Olympic.

5 Extra holes were plugged. 3 by the strainer and another 2 at the buttend. Got a new Red Glitter wrap (period correct Olympic color :D). Tried to improve that big scratch on the badge and cleaned the hardware just a bit!

Before and after:

ps: no edges were harmed during this procedure! :D

I always try to salvage the original wrap but with those extra holes plus all those "liver spots" plus the fading I felt "no harm done"! Would love to do it in the original "Aqua Spkl" but that's unavailable.

Is the top photo an original wrap or a re-wrap...? It looks to be original, yes ???

How did you patch the holes (exterior) on that one ???? did you use a patch of original wrap ???

what top photo? This one?

look over to the right. There's the two original holes for the strainer and the three extra holes for the incorrect strainer that come with it. In this photo they were already filled.

jcymbal...in the pic of the completed gold sparkle, it looked like those extra holes were gone...which is why I asked.

Dog....Olympics are ONE of the sleeper companies when it comes to vintage '60's-70's drums (shhhh, don't tell anyone, eh ?)....nobody is much interested in 'em, but as you reiterate....they were basically Premiers (just with simpler hardware) and their shells are absolutely A-1, class-act, top-notch old birch shells. Those shells have the best "bottom" of any shell configuration...which is why they sound so rich.

This drum was not gold spkl. It may look gold because of that light.

In the Olympic catalogue they call it "Silver-Blue Sparkle". It's beautiful when new but fades badly. The only two period correct wraps available today are Gold and Red Spkl.

ps: Although this new red seems a bit darker than the original 60's
