It is fitted to the shell.Yes, very nice little system - only "fault" being, that it really has be in its "on" position while in the bag, or the lever protrudes and threatens to be broken. I think, I would prefer the snares to "relax" while in the bag....Not a big problem, though.Jon

This lateral cam action design appears to have been originally used on pre-war German drums. A brand(i do not know the name of---i have seen two drums and they trademarked with the image of a rearing horse---no printed name) was using one in the 30's and there are Sonor drums around with a similar design, from the late 40's and 50's. More recently ,Tromsa used one from the 40's (maybe earlier) into the 70's. Most of the Tromsa/Roxy drums that I own have one of these.

The German versions have a full 180 degree stroke, so the lever is against the shell in both the on/off modes. I have seen examples of such a throwoff being attached to the top hoop on German drums----kind of an odd design.

Any chance of seeing those drums? The horse logo and throw sound interesting.

Here's an entire Discus centred kit in the U.K. with the same badge .http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-PREMIER-OLYMPIC-DRUM-KIT-LATE-1950s-/270898976523?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Drums_Percussions_MJ&hash=item3f12d6570b

These look nice and if they were here, I might buy them, since I might have the missing hoops too. I have bought from this seller before(off ebay) and the transaction was not good, so , if anyone is interested in these ,I would be carefull to get all the pieces of the puzzle arranged properly.

Regarding , the horse logo throwoff; there was a thread about a year ago, requesting I.D. for a drum fitted with it. I will look and see if I can find it.

Here it is.(not sure why it didn't show up the first time)http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=13999&highlight=horse . I remembered it as a rearing horse but it is just a horse with a lifted leg in the act of walking. In the last post, I clarify the origins of Roxy. The confusion seemed to be based on the lateral cam throwoff. In looking at the shell again , it does have some similarities to a Tromsa shell but also to early Trowa shells, which used exclusively beechwood( the only Tromsa/Roxy shell I have seen that was all beech are the bass drum shells). There is also the possibility of it being a Lefima but having seen another drum with this logo on it , that was even earlier, I suspect it to be a defunct builder. I have seen Sonor drums with a similar throwoff , also mounted on the hoop.
