Olympic by Premier Mahogany Duroplastic Snare

Loading...

I just picked up this snare. It's one of the US - Olympic by Premier made 6.5x14 drums. Wow! The build quality is top notch. It's an 8 lug, 3-ply shell (maple/mahogany/maple) with maple reinforcement rings. It has triple flange hoops with slotted tension rods. Based on the tension rods, I'm guessing this is an early 70's drum.

It's going to be matched with the 60's 2 piece kit in matching Mahogany Duroplastic.

Other than the popular Olympic drums websites, does anyone have any additional information about this version of Olympic drums?

I have two, one aquamarine sparkle in pristine condition (including the wrap color) and one that was used for spare parts.

The single screw for mounting the lug is a little sketchy but certainly a cost saver. The lugs themselves are a little dodgy as the threading for the mount can strip fairly easily. I have one lug stripped on my AMS snare but unfortunately my "parts" snare has issues with the lugs as even Premier's Diamond Chrome Plating could not hold up to liberal use of steel wool. So unfortunately I have 7 beautiful lugs and one in a brushed nickel finish. I will eventually try to re-tap the stripped lug and see how that goes.

The shells I believe are Premier's standard shell layup making these kits very similar the Ludwig Clubdate series among others from a marketing standpoint. Very nice, high quality and very thin shells. I always assumed the re-rings were beech but could very well be wrong. These drums have a fairly balanced "woody" tone. They will never be suitable for Stewart Copeland covers but they do sound good.

Mahogany Duroplastic is a really attractive color. Congratulations on that score.

Wow! An 8 minute reply. That's what makes this a great forum. :)

The 2 piece Premier kit also has the single screw for mounting the lugs. The grain on the re-rings looks different than the inner shell, so it's possible they're beech.

Here is a picture of the bearing edge and re-ring.

I am also looking for any info...I believe it is a 1003 from the 60's from a manual I saw...will find it and post link. I have been told and read that they are very rare and rarely even seen in the U.S. Just check out that sparkle!! Man it is cool...I am taking pics of the refurbishing job as well as I have to show the inner shell on this drum. Freaking looks brand new.

Mine is 14x6.50 and a sparkle wrap, very hard to tell wrap style...I am refurbishing it right now and am amazed at the quality and the shell itself. Even has the reported "Premier Smell." The only thing I am not crazy about is the one screw mount for the lug, not really phillips head but an auto screwdriver fits it tight..I removed super carefully with phillips and no strips,..but the lugs are perfect....I am super impressed, even has original heads and stand...Really taking my time with this one as I have a feeling its a special drum..so if you hear anything else, please pass along..

Are those lugs early 1970s?? I've only seen them on late 1970s/early 1980s drums... Just a thought.

Whatever the age, this is a great drum you have there.

Speedboat lugs first introduced in the early seventies on the olympic line, then used on their soundwave, club, crown, and apk kits. PM sent regarding this snare, chap.
