I purchased a neglected Olympic by Premier drum set for parts. The only unaltered drum was the 16" floor tom which I will use for my current restoration. The four piece kit had a Pearl double tom mount. Those holes are nasty. Same result with the 5 lug 8x12 rack tom.
Are these spurs original to Olympic?

The mounts are the same ones on my kit. As with many drum kits of that era, the term "disappearing spurs" was taken far to literally and mine, alas we lost. I replaced mine with straight stainless rod and I will say that on a 20" kick, those spurs come out a long way. It would make sense that the spurs should have been angled as yours are. I actually owned an identical kit as my first kit when I was 11. I do not recall the spurs being angled, but as I said, it would certainly make sense.

I also do not recall any Olympic or Premier kit from the 60's (later 70's/ 80's versions: yes) having angled spurs.
Anyway, the rubbers on it seem to be genuine.

The original disappearing spurs on my Premier Royale kit are completely straight
giving that ridiculously splayed look to the drum
this in of itself, I could accept
but even when fully extended they fall just short of firmly meeting the floor
if they were angled or if the spur brackets were located a little lower on the shell
they would most likely work fine
as they are, they not only look bad, they provide zero balance or support to the bass drum
I can not figure out how or why Premier would use such a terrible design
I realize the Royale model kits are their entry level
But aside from the spurs this kit seems to be very well built
I would hate to spoil the original straight spur rods
as useless as they are currently
But boy am I tempted to give them a well placed bend
a catalog cover shot of the black Royale kit and the white kit I bought last night
The white kit is the second Royale kit in my drum flock
the first was this black kit
It bothered me that someone re-fitted the original spurs with the folding type
drilling extra holes in the process
That was until last night when I saw in the white kit
(purchased thru craig's list 90.00 with 70's acrolite snare)
just how terrible the original design spurs really are
Also on this black kit,
the double tom mount and reciever were re-fitted by yours truly
with a slightly newer and 100 times more functional omni-ball type APK series mount
I did this for two reasons
1. I did not get the original oval or football shaped tom mount with the black kit
2. I had an orphaned APK bass drum with the ball mount hanging around the shop
and I noticed that the drillings in both the Royale and APK bass drum shells were identical
so it was an easily reversable modification as no extra holes were needed
I do have the matching FT (not pictured) but it was still in pieces and being cleaned when I went around snapping pics of a bunch of my drum sets

Blairndrums: I am planning to restore the 20" bass drum and 8x12. I have been seeking advice as to what material should be used. The shells are wafer thin 3 ply African Mahogany and a new matching interior veneer and a new outer rewrap would return these two drums to player condition.
