My father used to tuck his own calfskin heads on wooden rims. He used to soak them in the bath tub until they were pliable. Notice the heater outlet on the bass drum? He used these drums to play outside for public dances in band shells in Miami Beach. On a humid night, the heaters were connected to give the heads some response.

Yes. He was born in 1901 and died in 1988. He was a member of the United States Military Academy Band and Drum Corps (West Point) and played drums in the band on The Queen Mary I. He travelled the world on steamships until 1945 and then married and had me. You can see more information and photos in the thread A Vintage Drummer under my name, Harrabey.

I think these look like his Gretsch's but I was only seven when this picture was taken so I wasn't into labels at that age. However, here is a photo of me at four with my first marching snare
