Old Zildjian K hihat cymbal

Hi all!

This my first post here. I am hoping some of you could help me to find out more about this old K hihat cymbal.

I got it from my grandfather many years ago and I'm looking for any info you might have on the age or if it actually is a hihat cymbal. If it is a hihat is it a top cymbal or bottom cymbal? I'm hoping I might be able to find a cymbal that matches it to have a complete hihat some day.

I've searched around a bit and it seems to be from the 40's. Is that right?

The cymbal is 14" here are some pictures withe the stamps etc.

That's from the mid to later 1940's. They didn't specifically amke hi-hat cymbals as such. If hi-hats were ordered, they just picked out a pair of a given size and shipped them out. They were then matched up by Phil Grant at the Gretsch warehouse. Wether or not this one was ever used as a hi-hat depends on the wear marks on the outer edges.

Welcome.

Your cymbal is what Bill (Drumaholic) refers to as a Type IIa old stamp. He's already given you the time frame, I'm just adding the stamp type for reference purposes in case you're planning on selling it at some time in the future. Drumaholic's timeline is the standard reference for Istanbul k's here in the US, and I suspect in Europe as well.
